FREE TUITION UNIVERSITIES IN GERMANY: COST OF LIVING, VISA APPLICATION AND ADMISSION DEADLINE
on Tue, 07/15/2014 - 20:01
GERMAN EDUCATION IS AS GOOD AS THEIR FOOTBALL– CONGRATULATIONS GERMANY ON A WELL DESERVED WORLD CUP GLORY!
Study Abroad 365 has put together a list of 25 universities in Germany that are tuition free for international students seeking to study in Germany. However, be informed that while studying in Germany, you’ll be required to finance your feeding and accommodation expenses. International students should budget roughly 500 Euros for their books, healthcare, food and registration. So in one year, an international student should expect to spend 7000 Euros on feeding, accommodation and books expenses.
HOW TO OBTAIN A VISA
To obtain a German visa, you’ll have to show concrete finance proof of your ability to finance your accommodation and feeding expenses during your time of study. This can be done in either of two ways:
(1) Submit a letter of finances to the German consulate or embassy. You can obtain this sponsor letter from your parents or a German relative who is willing to sponsor your studies in Germany.
(2) Open a German blocked account and deposit roughly 7000 euro. This can only happen once you’ve received your letter of admission. This blocked account is opened in the German embassy.
For more information, visit a German consulate in your home country or check out their websites for further details.

Hi Shikar, getting into a
Hi Shikar, getting into a German university is a matter of meeting the entry requirements and making a good application. For a look at the top universities in Germany visit this page, or for rankings in your subject, please see our subject rankings. The higher up the rankings you go, the higher the entry requirements tend to be but for exact information about master's programs and entry requirements you'll need to visit the website of the school you're interested in and/or contact them directly. The DAAD website may also have more information on available programs.
Hope this helps! Laura T

Hi Jonathan, although we don
Hi Jonathan, although we don't have a ranking for liberal arts schools, we do have our arts and humanities faculty ranking which can show you the top universities in Germany within the arts field. From there, a good idea would be to research each university you like the sound of - by clicking their profile and visiting their website - to see if they offer the program/department you're looking for. Alternatively, if you're looking for specialist institutions, the DAAD site has a list of art and design courses currently available in Germany here. As for the cost of living in Germany, please see this article. If you need to know anything else, you can read our Study in Germany FAQ and make a comment at the bottom of the page if you still have any unanswered questions. Hope this helps! Laura T
Hi! I am currently a graduate
Hi! I am currently a graduate from University of Information Technology and Management in Poland as a Bachelor of Science in IT as a Software Engineer and now I want to take up another degree in Chemical Engineering in Germany as apparently the tuition fees in public universities in Germany is free. Is that possible? If yes,how about the requirements? Because I am interested to pursue my study in Chemical Engneering as well.Thank you in advance.
Hi Sureinthan, this is
Hi Sureinthan, this is definitely possible - there are no tuition fees for undergraduate students in Germany, for international students too! If you wish to undertake a master's program however, do expect to pay tuition fees. Entry requirements for universities in Germany vary between institutions - to find out if you meet the requirements for a particular school you should take a look at the program information listed on their website along with information provided for international student admissions. To find the names of the top universities in Germany for chemical engineering, please see our 2014 chemical engineering subject rankings. Bear in mind that the higher up the rankings the school is, the higher the entry requirements are likely to be. If you have any more questions please see our Study in Germany FAQ or the DAAD website. I hope this helps get you started! Laura

Hello, I am a senior in high school, from america, looking to further my education in Germany. I do not know how to go about this process. What do I need to do in order to attend school there? I also read above that the schools there are free?
Hi Naomi, you're right - all
Hi Naomi, you're right - all undergraduate students in Germany can study for free, even international students! Hopefully our Study in Germany FAQ can answer most of your questions on the topic, including application information, living costs, scholarships and more.
Hope this helps! Laura
Hi Laura,
Hi Laura,
It is amazing to that you guys are suggesting and guiding everyone with a very quick response. I've a few questions as below:
1. free university in Germany (in cities) for Ph.d in Information System Management/Project Management.
2. Approximate cost for living and basic tuition fees.
3. Work opportunities after completing Ph.D.
Would be great if you can shed some light on this.
Hi Pallabi, thanks! We try
Hi Pallabi, thanks! We try our best!
The good news is that studying for a PhD in Germany is free at all public universities. To find the German universities that are world leading in your subject please see our Computer Science and Information Systems subject rankings, this will point you in the right direction for finding a university right for you.
The next step would be to research any schools of interest to see if they offer the PhD program you are after (via their website or by contacting them directly).
Although fees do not exist for the first six semesters of your PhD, you will be expected to prove that you have enough money to cover your living costs.
After graduation you'll also be allowed to stay in Germany for a period of 18 months to look for employment, after which, if you have found work, you can extend your visa.

Hi Laura, I was wondering if
Hi Laura, I was wondering if you knew if it is possible to do a part time PhD as a distance learner?
Hi Julie, distance learning
Hi Julie, distance learning PhDs are not that common due to the intensive nature of study, but they do exist. There doesn't seem to be much information about these programs online, particularly for Germany (but this could be because these types of course are offered mainly in the German language). With this in mind you should try and conduct a search outlining the field you wish to study in e.g. 'distance learning phd in Microbiology in germany'. The quality of online courses can vary hugely however so you might want to check the university against our world rankings before applying. Laura
hi laura,
hi laura,
it is really pleasing that you guys are responding to everyone . and i need some information about doing my PG masters in germany. IS it true that the tution fees are free in germany? , and i have completed my UG with 6.3 cgpa. can i get the same 100% scholarship on tution fees ?.
Hi there, I'm afraid that
Hi there, I'm afraid that tuition fees for master's degrees in Germany still exist - unless you studied in the country at undergraduate level. Average fees for a master's degree are approximately €10,000 (US$13,782) per semester and even more at private institutions. Don't let this put you off however, as there are many scholarships available to postgraduate students to study in Germany (some covering all fees) - the best place to look for scholarships would be your chosen university's website or by looking for governmental schemes in Germany and/or your home country. Some available scholarships to study in Germany can be found here. Thanks, Laura

Hi Aiste. We have a guide to studying abroad in Austria here, and some further information about Vienna here. At undergraduate level, most courses are taught in German - in which case, yes, you will need to prove you have a good level of German. At master's level you'll find more courses taught in English. Hope this is helpful.

Hey i know this is not the right forum, but can i do LLM from US right after completing Bachelors in civil engineering .
Hi Muneeb, LLM programs are
Hi Muneeb, LLM programs are often highly competitive meaning that those without an undergraduate law degree will find it harder to get accepted on to an LLM program. This doesn't mean it's impossible, just a lot harder - particularly at top law schools in the US. To find out if your degree will be accepted you should take a look at the entry requirements of any university you're interested in attending to see if you are eligible. Thanks, Laura

Hello! Are there bachelors
Hello! Are there bachelors degrees taught in the English? I wanted to do Architecture. Please, do you have any information? Thank you so much!
Hi there Davi! English
Hi there Davi! English-language courses are available at undergraduate level but they are not overly common. There is limited information on the DAAD site but my advice would be to check out the top universities in Germany for civil and structural engineering (we don't have an Architecture ranking currently) and from there you should visit the website of any school you're interested in to see if they offer the program you're looking for. Not all the universities will offer the course in English - but I hope you find one that does! Laura

Hello Mojesh, entry
Hello Mojesh, entry requirements vary between institutions so you'll have to check on the website of any university you're interested in to find out what grades they ask for. To find prospective German universities, take a look at the top universities in Germany for computer ccience and information systems or visit our state-by-state guide. After finding the names of these universities, you can then find more information by clicking their profile or visiting their website. Bear in mind that the higher up the rankings the school is, the higher the entry requirements are likely to be. Good luck!

Hi Ganesh, this is a question
Hi Ganesh, this is a question we get asked a lot but information is fairly hard to come by. We will be publishing an article on English-language programs at German universities and how to find them in the coming weeks, but until then I would suggest to continue researching (via their website/Google) the universities featured in the mechanical engineering rankings. English-language programs aren't as common as you might expect, but with trial and error I hope you find a school that offers an English-led masters! Good luck and I'll post a link to the article once it's up. Thanks, Laura

Hi Laura. I recently discovered this post and got incredibly excited at the idea of studying a Masters degree of Forensic Psychology in Germany. I tried researching the list of universities Study365 described and was finding it incredibly difficult to find forensic psychology courses. Would you have any knowledge of this or be able help me at all? I am from the UK and would need English speaking courses. Staying in the UK for postgraduate courses is far too expensive for me, so I am desperate to find a cheaper solution! Please can you help?
Hi Rebecca, I can't tell you
Hi Rebecca, I can't tell you the names of particular schools in Germany offering forensic psychology programs, but I can show you our rankings of top universities in Germany for psychology and a state-by-state guide of universities in Germany. From there, I would advise you to search the websites of these universities (via their profile or Google) to see if A) they offer a forensic psychology specialization and B) if they offer it in English. This might be long task with not much reward, but I really hope you find a school that matches up! Laura

Hello, i am planning to have my english programme Master's (MSc for Chemical Engineering / Process Systems Engineering) at TU Dortmund, my German GPA is 2.5 i wanted to know if i have a good chance in being accepted or not?
Thanks in advance
Hi Abdallah, after looking on
Hi Abdallah, after looking on TU Dortmund's website it seems that they only accept 3.0 GPA and above (see here) . There may be exceptions to this rule if you have a strong academic record but you should contact both schools directly to see if they would like you to apply anyway. Good luck!

Hi Hamza, this is not an official requirement, but due to the lack of public universities offering English-speaking programs at undergraduate level, you may find it difficult to find a program for you. If you speak German this will be less of a problem. For official information on studying in Germany for Pakistani students see the DAAD website. Laura
Hi Laura! I am a graduate
Hi Laura! I am a graduate from University of Information Technology and Management in Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from Poland as a Software Engineer. Apparently the tuition fee for undergraduate studies in Germany at public universities is free. Now my question is can I take another degree (second undergraduate degree) in different field like medicine or dentistry in Germany for free? As I have another degree, is that possible? If yes, what will be the initial step to go about other than learning German as a prerequisite or an advantage to enter a public university there? Do I need to do A levels or any other preparatory course? Pls, I expect a genuine answer and FYI I am a Malaysian (foreigner). Any advice whatsoever will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Hi Sureinthan, yes is is
Hi Sureinthan, yes it is possible to study a second undergraduate degree for free in Germany but it may not be easy. This is due to the fact that there are not many international (English-language) programs at undergraduate level, meaning that you'll need to be proficient in German for the majority of programs. This will be even more likely for highly competitive medicine/dentistry programs at public universities. At master's level you are more likely to find an international program, but you will be required to pay fees. Take a look at the official requirements laid out on the DAAD website for more information about entry as a malaysian student. Laura
