FREE TUITION UNIVERSITIES IN GERMANY: COST OF LIVING, VISA APPLICATION AND ADMISSION DEADLINE

GERMAN EDUCATION IS AS GOOD AS THEIR FOOTBALL– CONGRATULATIONS GERMANY ON A WELL DESERVED WORLD CUP GLORY!
Study Abroad 365 has put together a list of 25 universities in Germany that are tuition free for international students seeking to study in Germany. However, be informed that while studying in Germany, you’ll be required to finance your feeding and accommodation expenses. International students should budget roughly 500 Euros for their books, healthcare, food and registration. So in one year, an international student should expect to spend 7000 Euros on feeding, accommodation and books expenses.
HOW TO OBTAIN A VISA
To obtain a German visa, you’ll have to show concrete finance proof of your ability to finance your accommodation and feeding expenses during your time of study. This can be done in either of two ways:
(1) Submit a letter of finances to the German consulate or embassy. You can obtain this sponsor letter from your parents or a German relative who is willing to sponsor your studies in Germany.
(2) Open a German blocked account and deposit roughly 7000 euro. This can only happen once you’ve received your letter of admission. This blocked account is opened in the German embassy.
For more information, visit a German consulate in your home country or check out their websites for further details.

Hi Leyla, our article Study in Germany in English lists a number of German universities offering English-led programs (but remember that only public universities are tuition free). My advice would also be to see our subject ranking of the top universities in Germany for chemistry and, from there, check out each school's website to see if they offer PhD programs in English. More and more schools are beginning to offer English programs but it takes a bit of online research to find out which. Good luck, Laura

Hi, see our subject rankings to find the top universities in the world for electrical engineering. For English programs, you can filter the results to show only English-speaking countries (UK, Australia, US, New Zealand, Canada etc.) or, with a bit more research find English-led programs in other countries such as Germany. See this article for more details on finding English programs in Germany. Laura :)

Hi Danish, your foundation year will likely take place at a different institution than where you wish to take your degree and there's no guarantee of gaining a spot at a university after you finish your prep year but don't let this put you off! The DAAD website lists a number of preporatory programs, but ensure the course is suitable for your subject area and will allow you to meet your future university's entry requirements before enrolling. Hi Yasmin, all public universities are free (there are many of them) but to find out if a school is public or private, you can do a quick online search. The requirements for these schools are laid out in question 3 of our Study in Germany FAQ. Question 4 also talks about the languages needed and might be useful.

To find the top universities in Germany for civil engineering, click here. More information for international students can be found on each school's official website.

Hello it's Derek from Taiwan. I just finished my bachlor and I'd love to study my master degree in Germany. My major is called Recreation and Leisure management, it's a faculty about recreation, as you see, and mainly sport management actually. But I just can't find any related master degree in the public universities. Could you please tell me if you know anything about this? Thank you very much!!!

Hi Derek, this is a long shot, but have you checked out all the schools in our business & management subject ranking? One of these may offer a program, but if not I'd also say keep looking! There are also a number of management programs in Germany listed on QS Courses, which might be of interest to you.

Good luck! And if I come across anything related to your field, I'll post again.

Hi i'm from The Bahamas and I've been desperately trying to find a tuition free school. I have no past post high school education and its kind of discouraging as I do not have the funds to pay tuition fees. However if i'm accepted to a school I have the ability to pay for monthly expenses, not on my own accord but by support of my mother and other family members. My family wants me to succeed and do well, so do I. So please, i've been searching forever for help with finding one but its been a challenge. I could really use your help.

Hi Ethan, I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling to find a school! It can be difficult, especially if you haven't completed 12 years of full time education. Have you checked on the websites of German schools to see their entry requirements? Many ask for a  ‘higher education entrance qualification’  or ‘Hochschulzugangsberechtigung’ (HZB), if this is the case you may have to take a 1-year long preporatory course before being eligible for university. Students normally undertake this course at a 'studienkollig' which are normally free of charge (with a small semester fee).

See our Study in Germany FAQ for more details on requirements and language proficiency.

Good luck, Laura

Hi Sameer, the majority of universities in Germany ask for a bachelor's degree from their graduate students, so if you haven't completed your first degree, you'll have difficulty finding a school willing to enroll you. See our FAQ for more details. Laura

Hello, This is Krishna from India. I have done my Bachelors Degree in Commerce in India. I am working in a bank for about 6 months now. I want to do MBA in finance. Are there any Universities in Germany which offer Full Time MBA with 1 year experience? i have done some research and most of the universities require 2 years experience. And few others require 4 to 5 years experience. But I cant wait that long. Could you please suggest some good universities which require only 1 year experience?

Hi Krishna, it is unlikely that many good German business schools will offer an MBA program with just 1 year experience, but an alternative would be to consider taking a Masters in Management program, which often don't ask for extensive work experience. To read about the difference, see this article and our Masters in Management guide. For more information on MBAs however, see our sister site TopMBA.com. Laura

Hi Laura,
Hope all is well with you. I am a Singaporean and would like to inquire about entry into the Masters program in one of Germany Universities. On hand, I have a diploma which I have obtained in Singapore and a degree that is obtained in Australia.
Looking at the FAQ section on requirements, I notice that Australia is not in the list of countries recognized qualification. Does that mean I cannot use my Australian degree to apply for a Master's program and I must do a undergrad degree as my Singapore Diploma is the recognised one? Please advise.

Thank you

Hi Kenneth, Australian degrees are often highly reputed so as long as your degree is from an accredited (recognized by the government) institution, your degree should definitely be valid to apply to German universities. Laura

Hello Shakir, all Germany's public universities are free of charge at bachelor and PhD level, but if you don't speak German, find a program will be much more difficult. See this article on Studying in Germany in English for more information.

To find out the entry requirements of universities in Germany, either see question 3 of our Study in Germany FAQ or visit the website of the school in question and search for details of your chosen program. You can find a full list of leading universities in Germany with our state-by-state guide, or, for the top schools for media & communication, click here.

Hello Laura,

I've found these articles to be extremely helpful. I'm a current student at a major university in the U.S. I'm Canadian-American. My German is limited, but I could learn it quickly. I'm interested in a tuition-free MBA program, but as far as I can tell I'd be considered non-consecutive if my degree is from outside Germany, and I'd still have to pay tuition. Is there a transfer program? What are my other options?

Hi Nikhitha. I'm afraid even in Germany, MBAs are not free, though they may be a more affordable option compared to some other countries. As usual, the tuition fees will vary depending on the business school you choose. For more information, visit our sister site, TopMBA.com. You'll usually be expected to have at least several years' professional experience before applying for an MBA, so it might be more relevant for you to consider another kind of specialized master's degree - for ideas and inspiration take a look at our guides to different types of business & management degrees.
