A sustainable career
There is more than one way of dealing with climate change, as graduate Nalin Agarwal is finding out. He tells topgradschool.com that a Masters in Sustainable Energy Futures is addressing the "green issue", the real problems of population growth and its demands on energy resources.
Name: Nalin Agarwal
Age: 23
Home city/country: Guwahati, India
Degree/s: BTech (Mech Eng), MSc Sustainable Energy Futures
Place of study: Imperial College London
Year of intended graduation: 2008
Career aspirations:
Raised in a country where environmental sustainable development is not an option but a requirement, its not surprising why graduate student Nalin Agarwal chose a Masters in Sustainable Energy Futures. I was interested in renewable and low carbon technologies, and the way they could contribute towards sustainable development, especially for developing economies - and naturally more so for my own country, India.
Work experience is a plus and I didnt have any
Before committing to the program Nalin, graduated with a Bachelors in Engineering. Work experience is a plus and I didnt have any he said. Since its an inter-disciplinary course, the diversity (for an engineering program) is relatively high which I very much enjoy. But like any good postgrad program, they look for a mix of people experienced and inexperienced, science and engineering.
Nalin describes his masters as an overview of the energy sector, the technology-systems, economics and policies. Therefore, there is a good deal of prior theoretical knowledge required. We learnt some engineering techniques during the taught modules, while the dissertation provides an opportunity to build on and enhance those skills. I definitely know so much more about energy and sustainable development compared to a few months ago, and the reason for that is that the course focuses our studies towards these subjects/issues.
For Nalin the future is about giving something back to nature and his home country.
Companies often visit the grad school trying to recruit students and though he is not entirely sure where the future will lead, Nalin is certain it will be in the direction of smaller companies within sustainable development. For Nalin the future is about giving something back to nature and his home country. He maintains the attraction of a chosen career in development is to make a perceptible difference in society, specifically by contributing towards balancing the needs of a growing population and its aspirations with due regard for the environment.
