Student profile: Masters in Accounting and Finance

Culturally and socially there were also a lot of differences for Yanfeng to get used to, the cost of living in the UK, particularly in London along with the highly changeable weather were downsides but there were also many positives, “I remember what struck me first about the UK was the pureness of the air and the blue sky. I lived in student accommodation on campus with a lot of trees and nature around. In China you are generally not aloud to walk on the grass so it was really funny for me to see that students were organizing barbecues outside, putting music on and dancing. I really also appreciate how English people are polite. They hold the door for the people behind them, which is different again from China. English people are also more disciplined when getting into a bus for example - they queue where as in China it can be sometimes a bit more disorganised.”

Yanfeng chose Ashton University for her Masters because of its reputation as a great business school. “The professors are really involved and experienced. I had a lot of different courses and the rhythm of work was quite intensive. Aston University has strong relationships with big companies which helps students to get really interesting positions. We also had a career course, which taught us how to write a good CV, a successful cover letter and how to manage the interview process.”

Yanfeng says her way of thinking is different today as a result of her time studying abroad in the UK. “I feel more independent, I can solve problems and when it happens I feel happy about it. I feel confident. I learned a lot in terms of management probably more than I would if I had studied in China. Of course, I improved my English a lot, which helps when it comes to looking for job in my field.”

With both an undergraduate and a graduate degree behind her Yanfeng is staying on in the UK hoping her application for a two-year post-study work visa is successful.
Once those two-years are up, she will need a work visa that she hopes to get with the support from a local company.
