Graduate programs in civil engineering
Currently a student at University College London (UCL) and a native of Hong Kong, Christopher Lo is enrolled on the MSc program in Environmental Systems Engineering. The degree focuses on the more environmental aspects of civil engineering, such as water treatment, the development of sustainable buildings and complex industrial initiatives in the context of more stringent regimes such as environmentalism. Lo, who has already participated in a field placement with a UK water company and secured a position after he graduates with Ove Arup Consultants in Hong Kong, believes that the more integrated approach of having hands-on experience as part of a graduate program sets his civil engineering degree apart from many others. Being a student here at UCL has highlighted one of the strengths of graduate programs in civil engineering we have the chance to relate our learning to the outside world, effectively putting theory into practice and seeing how the knowledge and skills we develop can have a direct impact on what we work on.
Lo, like other international graduates of Masters programs, can be sure that the experience and skills gained through completing a civil engineering degree qualify him for a successful career. With our continuing concerns for the environment, and our need to house and support an ever-increasing population, the demand for civil engineers will continue to increase for some time ahead. Perhaps a Masters degree in civil engineering or one of its various related fields is your first step on the path of an exciting and rewarding career.
