Introduction to Engineering
POST-QUALIFICATIONS CAREERS
The job prospects are currently huge in the engineering industry worldwide. One can get high-level jobs in government departments, private and public sector industries, research and teaching institutions. Specialized degrees also have other options available to them that are relevant to the engineering industry. For example, an aeronautical or aerospace graduate can find jobs in the airline services and aircraft manufacturing units as well as the defence service. Similarly, a chemical engineering graduate can work in chemical industries, refineries, acid manufacturing, medicines, varnishes, paints or fertilizers. Graduates can also find employment in research laboratories. Engineers are especially demanded in the technology sector.
A biennial survey of registered engineers, conducted by the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) in association with the Engineering Council UK (ECUK) revealed that the median total earnings for both Chartered Engineers and Incorporated Engineers had risen by approximately 10 per cent since 2005. The average mean earnings of registered engineers are now 58,668 for Chartered Engineers, 46,543 for Incorporated Engineers and 37,636 for Engineering Technicians.
Around the world starting salaries can vary depending upon the specialized degree and the cost of living but, on an average, engineering graduates are offered US$ 39,000 per annum. However, as a high-flying Chartered Engineer, one can well earn over US$ 138,000 per annum.
