Making UKM a role model for unity
Sharifah Hapsah’s mother was also influential in instilling this value in her. Her mother would take her along when she visited poor villages to teach the women sewing skills. “My interest deepened when I was studying medicine. We were always working with the community where we did a lot of research into health problems. During that time we were also learning about poverty, illiteracy and the various cultures of the community.”
As vice chancellor, she sees a great opportunity to contribute to community and country, to make UKM a model for national unity and create undergraduates who are socially-conscious.

The creation of individuals who are Gemilang, Cemerlang dan Terilang is an important goal for Malaysia as outlined by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and no one is more aware of its significance than Sharifah Hapsah.
“UKM is the national university. It is our duty to uphold the national aspiration.” Like Malaysia’s first angkasawan [astronaut], Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, who is a surgeon at HUKM (Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), she wants staff and students to have their feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.
