The GRE General Test
The GRE general test measures one's broad verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills not related to any specific field of study. The test is administered on computer in the United States, Canada and many other countries. In areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available, the test is offered at paper-based administrations.
How do I practice for the GRE general test?
It is important that you familiarize yourself with the basic structure and content of the GRE general test. Free test preparation material is sent to all individuals who register for the GRE test. The material can be downloaded at no cost from the GRE website at www.ets.org/gre/testprep.html. Additional GRE test preparation material is also available at no or at low cost at the GRE website.
What scores are reported on the GRE general test?
Three scores are reported on the general test: a Verbal score on a 200 to 800 score scale in 10-point increments; a Quantitative score on a 200 to 800 score scale in 10-point increments; and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 to 6 score scale in half-point increments.
Are changes to the GRE general test planned?
Changes to the general test were originally planned to launch in September 2007. However, in April 2007, ETS announced that the launch of the revised GRE general test had been postponed. The primary reason for canceling the launch of the revised GRE general test was a concern from ETS about ensuring adequate testing access for test takers. ETS and the GRE board remain committed to improving the general test. In fact, a plan to introduce changes to the test is currently under development.
