View from the Top : Meet the dean of SIPA, professor John H Coatsworth
The continuing significance of SIPA, as a world-renowned center for the development of policy and practice in public and international affairs, is recognised nowhere more than at Columbia University itself. In an ambitious development plan recently announced by the University, SIPA, along with other faculties, will move from its current location on 118th Street in Manhattan to a purpose built campus in Manhattanville, West Harlem. There are some exciting times ahead for Coatsworth and the School. “We have been allocated space on Columbia’s new campus in a building already being designed by a world class architect,” he says. “Although there are many questions to be answered in the coming months, what is clear is that SIPA will have the space that it needs to succeed as one of the world’s top schools of international and public policy.”
Coatsworth’s view on offering students access to international education opportunities is one that has developed over many years.
As an institution focusing on the academic challenges of the international environment, SIPA attract students from all over the world and is fully engaged in making the classroom as international as possible. Coatsworth’s view on offering students access to international education opportunities is one that has developed over many years. Whilst at Harvard, he presided over the Committee on Education Abroad and, along with colleagues, ensured that local students’ international experiences evolved from what he described as “unusual” to the “almost routine.” With a focus not only on the pursuit of traditional academic programs abroad but also work, volunteering and internship opportunities, Coatsworth believes an “international experience offers students exposure to the unfamiliar, a sense of global citizenship and an increased capacity to live and work in more diverse surroundings.”
At a time when our attention is turned to international affairs on political, economic, financial, policy and environmental levels, the demand for highly qualified graduate students in these fields is significant. As a leading international graduate school with specialized masters and PhD programs, SIPA may well be your destination of choice for an education and professional connections that enable you to a make a difference to the world in which you live.
