Singapore – Your choice for quality graduate education

By: Ms Magdalene Lee, Director, Education Services Division, Singapore Tourism Board

Students studying in Singapore are also encouraged to participate in student exchange programmes with the universities’ foreign counterparts. This will help the students to gain international exposure and thereby better prepare them for a career in the global environment. When they graduate, students go away not only with an academic dimension but would have acquired the relevant skills and abilities to survive in competitive environments, and are well-equipped for integration into the global community and the workforce.

There are many opportunities for networking in this cosmopolitan city with more than 80,000 international students from 120 nationalities, 60 International Organisations and 90,000 expatriates. Students get to interact with people from diverse nationalities and backgrounds and also have the opportunity to gain valuable working experience through internships and research with MNCs in a range of businesses, ranging from hotel and tourism to banking, and new media, design and technology to bio-sciences.

In addition, Singapore offers students the opportunity to immerse and integrate into a multicultural environment - an experience they will find beneficial when looking for work among globally oriented businesses.

  • Value for money educational destination

Singapore’s vast range of educational options provides world-class education at affordable costs. For students studying at leading foreign universities in Singapore, although tuition fees may be comparable to those of the main campuses, the lower cost of living in Singapore in addition to the internationally welcoming environment makes it a choice alternative.

Public education in Singapore is currently heavily subsidized and international students enjoy heavy subsidies.

For example, an international student at the university level will typically pay fees of S$8,000 per year (for a non-laboratory based course). The cost of education differs depending on the course structure and educational institution. For more information, please refer to http://www.singaporeedu.gov.sg/htm/stu/stu0303.htm. At the tertiary level, international students who take up the tuition grant, which is available to all qualified candidates, are required to work for three years upon graduation, either in Singapore, or with a Singapore-registered company overseas. In addition, some of the tertiary institutions, both public and private, do offer scholarships and bursaries.

  • Hospitable and Cosmopolitan Environment

The fascinating island-nation of Singapore tempts the international students with year-round tropical weather; beautifully restored historic districts; a diverse culinary scene featuring Chinese, Indian, Malay and other ethnic specialties; a reputation as a shoppers’ paradise; and other advantages such as excellent infrastructure, high-quality service, cultural diversity and a people-friendly, cosmopolitan setting.

Being at the crossroads of Asia, served by many low cost carriers and land and sea connections to some of the most exotic places in the region, students can also easily venture out to explore the region at very affordable prices.
