ABOUT NGS

The hallmark of the NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering (NGS) is the promotion of PhD research projects and an educational programme which transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries.

NGS aims to complement and strengthen PhD research and education at NUS, and to serve as a model graduate school regionally/globally.

NGS implements an excellent PhD research and education through:
- Rigorous selection of both students, and supervisors.
- Cross-faculty joint-supervision of PhD projects to enable integrative approaches to research.
- "Focus Areas" which bring together researchers in novel combinations, and to be developed into niche research areas at NUS.
- A 2+2 route with partner institutions which enhances the student’s overseas exposure, and forges new or tightens existing links with top notch collaborators abroad.
- The tailoring of coursework to individual needs and interests, an approach which affords talented students the opportunity to jump disciplines and/or conduct research which draws on the skill sets and knowledge of different disciplines.
- Courses that are taught by multi-disciplinary teams of faculty members, and which are timed to accord relevantly with the different stages of the PhD degree.
- A rigorous thesis examination process which involves oversight by a Thesis Advisor Committee throughout the PhD, and careful selection of Examiners, with a minimum of two External Examiners required.
- Mechanisms to track faithfully academic progress and student welfare.
