The School of International Service at American University was founded in 1957.  President Dwight D. Eisenhower, presiding over the groundbreaking, charged the school with a distinct mission: "to wage peace." Since then, SIS has continued its commitment to the field of international relations and advancing human dignity around the world.

That tradition continues today, as SIS offers two-year standard master's programs in the following fields:

         -          Comparative and Regional Studies

-          Global Environmental Politics
         -          International Communication
         -          International Development
         -          International Economic Policy
         -          International Politics
         -          International Peace and Conflict Resolution
         -          United States Foreign Policy

SIS also offers a one-year executive master's program (Master of International Service) for mid-career professionals with significant work experience in international affairs, and a Ph.D. program in International Relations.  Additionally, the School has dual degree programs with Ritsumeikan University in Japan, Korea University, Sookmyung Women's University, and the University of Peace in Costa Rica.  Dual J.D./M.A.,  M.A./M.B.A., M.A./M.A.T., and M.A./M.T.S. programs are also available on the American University campus.

International students interested in short-term graduate-level studies are encouraged to look into the graduate certificate programs in the fields of Cross-cultural Communication, International Economic Relations, the Americas, and Peacebuilding.
