Up to five awards will be made across the following five areas: (1) arts, humanities, and social sciences; (2) natural sciences and mathematics; (3) engineering; (4) professional programs and education; and (5) interdisciplinary research (formerly known as the Millennium Interdisciplinary Dissertation Fellowship).
ELIGIBILITY
The applicant must:
* have demonstrated the ability to carry out original research at a high level;
* have already advanced to doctoral candidacy;
* be prepared to devote full time to writing the dissertation with no other employment, including university assistantships. It is expected that the student will be within one year of completion of the dissertation upon receipt of the award.

Eligibility for this award will be rotated across colleges. The 2006 competition will be open to students at East College, West campus, and Public Programs. Academic units in these colleges/schools are invited to nominate one student for the 2006–2007 Herman E. DeMund Memorial Fellowship. The recipient will be chosen from the pool of nominees.
Nominees must be regularly admitted to a graduate degree program to be eligible. International students must have been enrolled at ASU or at another U.S. university for one academic year immediately prior to the award period to be eligible. Complete applications that meet all eligibility requirements will be assessed in terms of the following criteria:
1. Academic accomplishments including, but not limited to GPA, test scores, publications, exhibitions, presentations;
2. Contribution to the discipline including clarity and importance of the applicant's research questions or creative endeavors, as demonstrated in the letter of nomination and vita;
3. Progress towards the degree, with typical time-to-degree in the academic program clarified in the letter of nomination; and
4. Contributions to the academic community (e.g., teaching awards or other recommendations, substantial service activities).
