Applicants whose first or native language is not English are required to take a test of English proficiency as part of the application procedure. Caltech recognizes scores from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and from the Cambridge Examinations and International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Applicants who take the TOEFL exam are also strongly encouraged to take the Test of Written English (TWE) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE) and to submit these scores as part of their application.

The Institute offers a number of endowed fellowships to graduate students of exceptional ability who wish to pursue advanced study and research. Most of these fellowships are one-year awards that cover the first year of graduate study. Caltech does, however, have several multi-year fellowships, funded by a generous gift from Betty and Gordon Moore. In order to provide students with valuable teaching experience, the Moore Fellowship provides for its recipients to serve as a teaching assistant for three terms during the tenure of the award.
Caltech also offers several other fellowships funded by generous donations from: Benjamin M. Rosen, Virginia Gilloon, William H. Pickering, Albert and Marguerite Ramond, and Henry and Grazyna A. Bauer.
