The Heinz School at Carnegie Mellon University has an international reputation for excellence in educational programs and faculty research. Its programs in information technology, criminal justice policy, policy analysis, finance and environmental policy are respected across the nation and internationally as among the elite. Programs in health care and medical management, educational technology and other areas continue to grow and take national prominence.

Heinz School graduates serve in key managerial positions across a wide range of government, business and non-profit organizations. We take a flexible and interdisciplinary approach to teach students to look at societal problems from many different perspectives, using technology, quantitative and qualitative analysis and group dynamics to arrive at innovative solutions.

  • We conduct problem-driven, rigorous, interdisciplinary research that will improve our understanding of the causes of the problems facing the nation and its institutions and identify or lead to effective solutions to those problems as well as creative ways of implementing those solutions.
  • We prepare doctoral students to pursue our vision of interdisciplinary research, teaching and community service in the public interest at other research universities across the nation and around the world.
  • We prepare master's students from diverse backgrounds to be leaders in serving the public interest in government agencies, non-profit organizations and the private sector. We provide our students with interdisciplinary skills in problem-solving and encourage a concern for the public interest that will enable them to introduce innovations in the policies and operations of our nation's institutions.
  • We take an active role in efforts to improve our region, our nation and the world through our relationships with policy-makers, community leaders and others. We pursue important public issues as opportunities for research and teaching, and we act as a catalyst for change at the local and national levels.
  • We achieve excellence in research, teaching and community service, serving as a model for universities to simultaneously do all three.

The school's strengths span the applied disciplines of empirical methods and statistics, economics, information systems and technology, operations research and organizational behavior. Perhaps the greatest strength is the interdisciplinary nature of the school. We take pride in fostering collaboration across these disciplines and believe this collaboration leads to innovation in research, education and public service.

"Enduring power comes through truth derived from the hard work of rigorous analysis, the application of appropriate technology and the examination of problems from an interdisciplinary, systems-oriented perspective The Heinz School has consistently pursued two ideals - to create knowledge capable of supporting intelligent action in the service of the public interest, and to train men and women capable of using that new knowledge to change the world."
