Deakin University is an Australian Government funded university and is a member of the Universities Australia and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Its degrees are recognised by universities worldwide, as well as by relevant Australian professional associations.
Deakin University's reputation for excellent teaching and innovative course delivery has been recognised through many awards in recent years, including a national Award for Teaching Excellence and seven Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the 2006 Carrick Awards. Deakin has won the prestigious Australian University of the Year award twice - for our clever use of technology in education and for our partnerships with industry.
A joint DeakinPrime and Coles Group Limited initiative, the Coles Group Institute was recently named as a winner at the international 8th Annual Corporate University Xchange Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Corporate Learning.
Deakin was most recently audited by the Australian Universities Quality Agency in 2005 and received an excellent Audit Report.
Deakin is showing research leadership in areas such as Advanced Materials, Biotechnology, Globalisation, Public Health, Sustainability, Learning, Built Environment and Organisational Management. The World Health Organisation has awarded Deakin University "Collaborating Centre" status for its research on Obesity Prevention.
Tuition fees are based on the subjects in which a student is enrolled. This means that students pay fees for the subjects chosen in a course, rather than paying a fixed course price. Different subjects have different fees, which are based on how much each subject costs the University to provide. A normal full-time study load is 8 subjects per year. Postgraduate coursework international tuition fees for 2007 range from A$15,744 per year for education (A$1,968 per subject) to A$27,824 per year for agriculture (A$3,478 per subject). Annual fees for higher degree by research programs in 2007 range from A$16,800 for humanities to A$19,950 for behavioural sciences.
An overall band score of 6.5 or better in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test (Academic module) conducted by the British Council/IDP Education Australia office, provided that no individual band score is less that 6.
A score of 237 or better (essay rating 4.5) in the computer-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL CBT).
A score of 92 or better (writing score 21) in the internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT).
Accommodation is available in student residences at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds, the Warrnambool Campus and the Melbourne Campus at Burwood. Each resident is housed in single room accommodation with phone and computer access. Bedrooms are furnished, heated and carpeted. There are shared bathrooms, kitchens, laundry and recreational areas. The residences have a common room with meeting rooms, kitchen, television area and a large open space for social events.
Fees for on-campus residential accommodation in 2007, based on the academic year of 39 weeks, for one person, range from A$6,806 at the Warrnambool Campus, to A$8,175 at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds, and A$8,700 at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood.
International students studying at Deakin are eligible to apply for a wide range of scholarships and bursaries to assist them in their studies.
Scholarships and bursaries are awarded on the basis of academic merit, and are based on different selection criteria ranging from faculty, course and campus, to country of origin, industry and research focus.
Deakin scholarships for international students included bursaries awarded through the Deakin University International Scholarship Program (DUISP), scholarships offered in conjunction with leading industry bodies, and international research scholarships for research students.

The following general academic admission requirements apply to postgraduate studies. Students must also meet English language requirements.
Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma:
Applicants applying for admission must generally have: completed at least an approved three-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from an approved university or other educational institution; or
completed other equivalent qualifications gained by examination, or approved professional or industrial experience.
Masters degree by coursework:
Applicants applying for admission must generally have completed at least a three-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, of an acceptable standard from an approved university or other educational institution.
Research degrees:
Research degree students are aligned with Deakin's areas of research strength. Deakin University's current research priority areas are: Advanced Materials and Manufacturing; Biotechnology; Globalisation; Public Health; Sustainability; Learning; Built Environment and Organisational Management.
Masters degree by research:
Applicants should normally have successfully completed a bachelor degree with honours of at least second class standard, from a recognised tertiary institution, in an appropriate discipline for which the University can provide the required supervisory expertise. Applicants are encouraged to contact Deakin University faculty staff to discuss research areas of interest before submitting an application.
Doctoral programs:
Applicants will normally have successfully completed a bachelor degree with honours of at least upper second class standard, or a masters degree by research, from a recognised tertiary institution, in an appropriate discipline for which the University can provide the required supervisory expertise. Applicants are encouraged to contact Deakin University faculty staff to discuss research areas of interest before submitting an application.
If a student meets Deakin University's academic entrance requirements, but does not meet the English language requirements, he or she will automatically be eligible for placement at the Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI).
Located on Deakin's Melbourne Campus at Burwood, DUELI offers English language courses, from elementary to advanced levels, with a strong emphasis on preparing students for university study. The courses are task-based so students can develop the English skills needed to achieve success.
DUELI students have access to a wide range of Deakin services and facilities, including the University library services, health and counselling and the use of sports facilities. DUELI is accredited by the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) and is a member of the University English Centres Australia and English Australia.
Academic support is available to students throughout their time at Deakin, providing advice and assistance in areas including time management, reading and note-taking, avoiding plagiarism, critical thinking, writing essays, and reports, class presentations and exam preparation.
