At Freie Universitaet, the basis for educating outstanding young academics and scientists lies in granting utmost freedom for the pursuit of ideas, combining personal liberty with strong individual support from academic advisors, and establishing a multitude of opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary networking with young academics as well as seasoned scholars. The university thus encourages graduate students to pursue their studies with a high degree of autonomy and independence. At the same time, Freie Universitaet fosters individual supervision by faculty members from the respective departments and opportunities for regular peer reviews with other graduate students.

Freie Universitaet offers master’s degrees in more than 100 subjects; many courses are taught in English. The pursuit of doctoral degrees is possible in almost all subjects the university offers, given that a professor sponsors and advises the student’s research project. In addition to this procedure of an individual working on a dissertation in close cooperation with one faculty member – which constitutes the traditional and still most common way to obtain a doctoral degree in Germany – Freie Universitaet has set out to develop coordinated programs for the completion of doctoral degrees. These structured programs provide graduate students with the opportunity to work within a coordinated research program run by a number of university professors.
For information on structured doctoral programs please visit the Dahlem Research School at www.fu-berlin.de/drs
Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 2,363 FTE: 1,858
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
Number of International Faculty Staff Headcount: 321 FTE: 263
Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained.

In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained. Please exclude all exchange students. As for language students, if the language students take up a particular language course that is outlined as 'undergraduate degree program' they should be included under 'international undergraduate students' . Language students who take part in a course not contributing to a degree qualification should be counted under 'Total International Students'.

Entry Requirements
Avg Entry Requirements 4
Please express the average academic achievement entry requirements for your institution. Please convert your domestic requirements to the US Grade Point Average system. The five-point numerical scale is typically correlated with the A-F/A-E quality index. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, E or F = 0.0) In our context, a value of 0 will imply to us that your institution has an "open access" admissions policy and will in no way count against your institution in any future table built upon this data. You can use World Education Services (WES) Toolkit as guidline: http://www.wes.org/gradeconversionguide/index.asp (copy and paste)
Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence

Freie Universitaet’s institutional strategy to enhance international research networks was selected for funding in the German Initiative for Excellence, granting Freie Universitaet the status "University of Excellence."

Three new service centers for researchers and young academics form the core of the university’s International Network concept:

Dahlem Research School
In order to create a productive, inspiring, and concentrated environment for doctoral candidates, Freie Universität has established Dahlem Research School (DRS). This institution presents a framework for Freie Universitaet’s structured graduate programs and helps to establish a network of highly qualified young academics. In addition to providing grants, scholarships, and financial aid to the students in the respective programs (e.g., for research projects, conferences, or travel), Dahlem Research School supports doctoral candidates in their personal, professional, and career development in a research environment. Its training program offers a wide range of courses covering five major areas: academic, management, career, IT, and language skills. Many services are specifically targeted at international students. Dahlem Research School’s orientation weeks include a concentrated 3-week program, consisting of intensive German language training, support with formalities, introductory workshops, and joint leisure activities.

Center for International Cooperation
The Center for International Cooperation (CIC) provides assistance to exceptional international graduates, scholars, and scientists who wish to pursue research at Freie Universitaet Berlin or initiate cooperation – both on an individual and on an institutional level. CIC aims not only to increase inbound and outbound mobility for young academics and researchers, but also assists with the development and planning of international research and graduate programs, conferences, and alumni networks.

Center for Cluster Development
The Center for Cluster Development (CCD) offers a new service for scholars who seek to found new research groups and establish networks of expertise on a regional, national, and international level. CCD supports researchers in processes of developing research clusters likely to give rise to innovations in industry (particularly the sciences), politics (social sciences), and cultural development (humanities).
