Goldsmiths is internationally known for creativity and innovation - a reputation backed up by the highest academic standards, and over a century's membership of the University of London. Located in New Cross, South East London, the College has nearly 8,000 students taking part in undergraduate, postgraduate and adult education study opportunities in the arts, social sciences and humanities.

With alumni including Antony Gormley, Julian Clary, Damien Hirst, Mary Quant, Bridget Riley, Graham Coxon and Malcolm McLaren, Goldsmiths brings creative and unconventional approaches to the subjects offered. The College is friendly and vibrant, and proud of the diverse student population which adds to this welcoming atmosphere - nearly 20% of students come from countries outside the European Union, and 45% of all undergraduates are mature students (aged 21 or over at the start of their studies).

Members of the 1994 Group of smaller, research oriented universities, Goldsmiths is a serious academic force, and achieved outstanding successes in the 2008 independent Research Assessment Exercise, which placed us 9th in the country for world-leading research (based on the top 4* rating).

Postgraduate students are stretched academically, encouraged to look beyond preconceptions and boundaries to gain insights from other disciplines. The academic departments and smaller research centres and units are supportive and interdisciplinary, and students' ventures are enriched by this embracing ethos.

Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff FTE: 448
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
Number of International Faculty Staff FTE: 118
Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained.

As for language students, if the language students take up a particular language course that is outlined as 'undergraduate degree program' they should be included under 'international undergraduate students' . Language students who take part in a course not contributing to a degree qualification should be counted under 'Total International Students'.

Outlook
Our distinctive approach to teaching and research encourages you to explore ideas that challenge and push preconceived boundaries, meaning that you’ll be stretched intellectually and creatively to investigate fresh new ways of thinking.

Location
Our South East London location will give you a unique perspective on the capital. It’s close to the centre of things, but offers lots of local hidden gems.

Diversity
Our students come from over 120 different countries, with over 20% of the student population coming from outside of the UK, helping to create the diverse student population that we are so proud of.

Community
At Goldsmiths you’ll find almost everything together on one site, so there’s a strong campus feel to life here: we’re big enough to offer some fantastic facilities, but not so big that things seem impersonal and unfriendly. We’ve been voted London’s friendliest university by Friends Reunited for the past two years.

Quality
We are committed to making sure that you are offered high quality teaching and learning opportunities during your time here. Students can take an active part in monitoring quality and standards in their departments as part of our quality assurance mechanisms. In 2005 the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education gave us a rating of ‘broad confidence’ in our academic standards in the quality of our programmes and awards, the top grade that can be awarded.

Excellence
We have a reputation for excellence in the subjects that we offer. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2001), our Departments of Media and Communications, and Sociology achieved the prized 5* rating, for international excellence in the majority of their research areas; Anthropology, Art, Design, English and Music all received a rating of 5 (international excellence in some areas of activity, national excellence in virtually all others).

Experience
The active social scene at Goldsmiths means that there are lively events to cater to everyone’s tastes – from performances and concerts to exhibitions and shows. And our fantastic Students’ Union offers you the opportunity to get even more involved, through award-winning volunteering placements or working on the student magazine or radio station, for example.
