Consistently rated in the top three UK university institutions and in the top 10 worldwide, Imperial College London is a world leading science-based university whose reputation for excellence in teaching and research attracts students (14,000) and staff (8,200) of the highest international quality.

Innovative research at the College explores the interface between science, medicine, engineering and management and delivers practical solutions that enhance the quality of life and the environment underpinned by a dynamic enterprise culture. Imperial College staff are frequently consulted by government and departmental committees at both national and international levels. They also act as members of professional bodies, advise industry, and offer informed comment to the media.

Imperial nurtures a can do entrepreneurial culture and as a result has an enormous amount of intellectual capital. It has about 90 spin-out companies to date and is adding to this by an average of two per month.

The College has strong links with industry and a large proportion of its research funding, which is in excess of 345 million, comes from industrial partners.

Imperial College was established in 1907 by Royal Charter, bringing together the Royal College of Science, the City and Guilds College and the Royal School of Mines in Londons cultural heartland of South Kensington. Between 1988 and 2000 several London medical institutions merged with the College, which now has the largest medical school in Europe. Today Imperial has seven campuses in London, one in Berkshire and one in Kent. In July 2007, Imperial celebrated its Centenary and left the University of London to become an independent university institution.
Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff FTE: 3,097
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.

Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained.
