Purdue University was founded in 1869 as a land grant institution. Today, Purdue University is one of the largest universities in the nation. Purdue's West Lafayette campus covers nearly 2,500 acres with more than 160 major buildings including academic and residential complexes. On the West Lafayette campus alone, the University offers over 70 graduate programs with more than 600 research and study areas organized in 10 colleges and schools within the Graduate School. Approximately 39,000 students are enrolled at the West Lafayette campus, including over 7,400 graduate and professional students. Purdue is home to more than 5,000 international students, including more than 3,000 graduate and professional students. Approximately 40 percent of Purdue's graduate students are international students. Purdue ranks second in international enrollment among all public colleges and universities in the United States. Students from nearly 130 countries and more than 30 nations attend Purdue. Purdue has approximately 600 international faculty and staff.

International degree-seeking applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores for admission to Graduate School at Purdue. Many programs also require the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). The Graduate School accepts all valid TOEFL scores, including those earned through the paper-based, computer-based, and Internet-based tests. The minimum TOEFL test scores for admission are:
Paper-based - 550, Computer-based - 213. Internet-based Writing - 18,
Speaking - 18, Listening - 14, Reading - 19, Total - 77. (Note that the minimum total TOEFL score is greater than the sum of the minimums for the individual test components.)
IELTS - overall band score of 6.5
Some graduate programs require higher minimum scores.
There are a variety of affordable housing options available both on campus and off-campus. On-Campus Housing: Purdue Village (apartment-style housing), Hawkins Hall (single and double rooms), and PRF Residential Housing (apartments and houses close to campus). Consider both West Lafayette and Lafayette (directly across the river from West Lafayette) for off-campus housing.
Over 80% of Purdue's full-time graduate students receive some funding by or through the University. There are three primary options for financial assistance: fellowships and grants, graduate student assistantships, and loans. Incentive and travel grants are also available. You should begin your search for funding approximately one year before you will need it to support your graduate education.

English 620: Classroom Communication for International Teaching Assistants, English 621: Written Communication for International Graduate Students. The Oral English Proficiency Program (OEPP) serves as a resource for international graduate students and graduate students studying Enligh as a Second Language. The International Center offers English classes and the Conversation Partner Program to strengthen language skills.
Full-ride scholarship that covers one bachelor's degree, one master's degree or MBA, and a PhD or medical degree (from Indiana University Medical School). In addition to Purdue's cost of education (including standard allowances for housing, books, and travel), the scholarship includes funding for one, one-semester study abroad experience.
Criteria: Extremely selective: by invitation only. Students must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, strong leadership experience, active involvement in school and community, and personal achievement.

The Marquis Scholarship is awarded to income-eligible Indiana residents who do not earn a Trustees or Presidential scholarship, who meet the November 15 admission application deadline, and who file a FAFSA by March 1.
Criteria: Family income (student + parent) between $40,000 and $100,000; at least 1150 SAT (Critical Reading + Math) or 25 ACT composite; core GPA of at least 3.40. The scholarship is renewable for students who maintain a 2.65 GPA, file a FAFSA each year, and remain financially eligible.

Purdue will calculate student GPA based on grades in core academic coursework as provided on the final junior year transcript. Purdue also will determine the qualifying coursework, which will include math, science, English, social studies, and foreign language.

Admitted students who meet the academic criteria for these awards will receive them automatically if they complete their admission application by November 15. Students who meet the application deadline may submit new SAT or ACT test scores for scholarship consideration until January 1, 2010. New scores must be sent electronically from the testing agency. Only domestic students are eligible for the Presidential scholarships.
