GERMAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: PROFILE
The German Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), a subsidiary of Technische Universität München (TUM) in Singapore is the result of the first ever German-Asian university partnership. Through its groundbreaking collaboration with Singapore's two leading universities, TUM has pioneered globalisation of German universities by creating GIST in partnership with National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
GIST commenced operations in 2002 with the support of both the Singapore and the German Governments through the Economic Development Board (EDB), Singapore, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Joint German-Singaporean Degree
GIST currently offers joint Master of Science programmes in Industrial Chemistry (in partnership with NUS), Integrated Circuit Design (in partnership with NTU) and Microelectronics (in partnership with NTU). More MSc and PhD programmes are planned in areas such as Aerospace Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computational Science and Simulation.
TUM is one of the most innovative institutions of higher education in Germany and a leading university in Europe. It is dedicated to generating and communicating highly specialized research and to providing excellent academic education.
Ranking among the finest universities in the Asian-Pacific region, NUS aims to be a global knowledge-enterprise, actively promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. "NUS is honoured to partner with TUM in this very special and prestigious program on Industrial Chemistry. This program is one of its kind which effectively integrates academic riguor, leveraging on the strengths of both TUM and NUS, with valuable internship experience in top companies in Germany," says Prof. Tan Eng Chye Dean Science, NUS.
The Dean School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), NTU Professor Kam Chan Hin also lauded the launch of the ICD programme and said, "the School of EEE, NTU has worked with TUM to launch this new Joint Master of Science IC DesignProgramme with strong technical emphasis on both the theory and practice of integrated circuit design". NTU is one of Asia Pacific's premier universities, having grown from a small engineering institute into a leading centre of learning for industry and business.
Laying the Foundations of a Professional Career
The master's degree programmes at GIST are unique as participants are immersed in both theoretical and practical aspects of their specialisations. First they go through 10 months of coursework in Singapore taught by an international team of staff including industry specialists and Nobel Laureates. Then they perform 2 months of internship with an industry partner in Asia or Europe and conduct 6 months of research work (done at TUM, NUS/NTU or with an industry partner) to complete a Master's thesis. All programmes are conducted in English.
"The different teaching methods and a multicultural environment make studying at GIST a very rewarding experience and as an intern I can actually put my knowledge to test"
Chen Min, GIST Alumni, Infineon Technologies
Close cooperation with high tech companies assures that highly qualified personnel can be trained to serve the needs of companies operating globally. Partners are involved in the development of the curricula and participate actively in the programmes by deploying lecturers and mentors. Industry sponsors for the programmes include Altana, BASF, Degussa, Infineon Technologies, Merck, SGL Carbon and Wacker to name a few. They have contributed to the project by offering internships, grants and Performance Awards to students.
"At GIST there is an exchange of knowledge across nationalities and disciplines in an environment akin to most multinationals operating in Asia today"
Chirag Tejuja,GIST Alumnus, Assistant Manager, Technical Product Management Ultradur®
BASF South East Asia Pte Ltd
Today GIST graduates are working with corporate leaders like BASF, Degussa, Sud-Chemie, Wacker, etc. Still others are pursuing Doctoral degrees with universities in Germany, USA and Singapore.
