The Universidad de los Andes was founded in 1948 as a private, non-profit institution. Due to its constant innovation in course offerings and teaching methodologies it has been at the vanguard of education since its creation. Teacher training and the commitment to quality—according to international standards—allow the University to guarantee the quality of its educational programs, centers and projects.

The University currently offers 28 undergraduate programs and 57 graduate programs, including doctorates, masters degrees and specializations. In the first semester of 2005, the student population surpassed 11,000 and the teaching staff numbered more than 1,000. In addition to teaching, many professors are dedicated to research and the creation and provision of services to Colombian society.

The UniAndes campus is in the historic district called La Candelaria. Well-situated and close to public transportation, the University enjoys easy access to many important cultural and academic sites: The Gold Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Luis Ángel Arango Library, and the National Library, along with local architectural treasures. It is also close to many important government sites: Casa de Nariño (home of the President), the National Capital and the Hall of Justice. The campus’s spectacular location at the foot of Monserrate, the symbol of the city, is a link to nature and peace and quiet.

The Los Andes campus, initially constructed in 1948, reflects tradition and history through its restored antique buildings; at the same time, the University expands and looks toward the future with newer, high-tech facilities that benefit students, faculty and staff.

Walking around the University feels like stepping into another place. As you go along brick pathways that wind in and out of trees and around the buildings, there is a connection with the environment—the air and the mountains—that is so unique to Colombia.
