The University of Pavia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. An edict issued by King Lotharius quotes a higher education institution in Pavia as already established in 825. This institution, mainly devoted to law studies, was then chosen as the main education centre for northern Italy. Enlarged and renovated by the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, it became the University of the Duchy, officially established as a Studium Generale by Emperor Charles IV in 1361. Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) is only one of a large group of famous professors who taught at the University of Pavia. To mention just a few, let us recall Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576), Antonio Scarpa (1752-1832) and Camillo Golgi (1843-1926). Today Pavia is a Research University, offering a wide variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching organized in nine faculties: Economics, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Literature and Philosophy, Medicine and Surgery, Science (Mathematics, Physics Chemistry, Biology and Natural Science), Political Science and Musicology. The University offers Degree Courses, Doctorates, Postgraduate Schools, Specialization Courses and Masters. Research is carried out in departments, institutes, clinics, centres, and laboratories in close association with public and private institutions, enterprises and companies.

The postgraduate program was introduced into the Italian University national system as the third level of higher education, by the President of the Italian Republic through the decree n. 382 in year 1980 and operated with steady continuity since 1983. The aim was to recover the delay existing with other European Countries awarding an advanced education title named “Doctorat”, introduced in the late XIXth Century in Germany to provide “problem solvers” to the industrial world. By law, the doctorate courses last 3 years. A possible extension of 6 to 12 months is allowed in special documented cases.
Under the recommendations of the Ministry of University and Research in 2005, the graduate programs were to be organized in “Graduate Schools”. Thus, the graduate program of the University of Pavia is now carried out by 5 specific Graduate Schools grouped into a comprehensive body.
As a “Research University”, the University of Pavia is aiming at a set of "Doctorate of excellence” by mean of which to form higher education
graduates, ready to act as “problem solvers” as envisaged in the very original meaning of “Doctorat”.
Each School coordinates several doctorate course as to develop possible common research projects, science formation, series of common seminars and the list of formal courses offered to the graduate students by the single doctorate. The five specific Schools are:
- the “Alessandro Volta” School of Science and Technology which coordinates six doctorate programs;
- the “Camillo Golgi” School of Live Science, which coordinates ten doctorate programs;
- the School of Ingeneering Science, which coordinates five doctorate programs;
- the School for Humanistic Science, which coordinates seven doctorate programs;
- the School of Economic, Juridical, Political and Social Science, which coordinates eight doctorate programs;
for a total of 36 courses. Some of the Doctorates participate into international cooperative programs with foreign “partner Institutions” to deliver joint international certificates; others participate into “joint” training programs (joint advisors or co-tutele) with Countries of the European Union.

Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff Headcount: 1,138 FTE: 1,101
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
Number of International Faculty Staff Headcount: 26 FTE: 25
Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained.

Number of International Undergraduate Students Headcount: 945

In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained. Please exclude all exchange students. As for language students, if the language students take up a particular language course that is outlined as 'undergraduate degree program' they should be included under 'international undergraduate students' . Language students who take part in a course not contributing to a degree qualification should be counted under 'Total International Students'.

Accommodation

The University of Pavia, is among the universities that possess the most estensive Halls of Residence system in Italy. The majority of its students are housed in its 16 Halls. The most ancient ones date back to 1564 (Collegio Borromeo) and 1567 (Collegio Ghislieri), while the two most recent ones (Collegio Maino and Volta) have been founded in year 2000. The Halls are either male or female, catered or self-catered (with kitchens on each floor for student use). Most Halls admit both undergraduate and graduate students and places are offered for the academic year except Christmas and Easter vacations. Although all Colleges are bound by University Statutes, the funding status of individual Colleges varies. Some have independent status; the majority receive core support from the regional educational authority. Students, at the University of Pavia, are not obliged to be members of any College in order to gain admission to the University but a
number of them elect to live in College. The procedures for admission and the forms of College teaching vary across Colleges and prospective applicants are advised to contact directly the College of interest.

The Centro Assistenza Studenti offers a series of services to University students designed to facilitate their stay in Pavia and to encourage full participation in University life. CAI works on behalf of the University of Pavia to find lodgings and provide general support vis-à-vis accommodation for students coming to Pavia as part of the Socrates program and other international programs.
