The University is focused on maintaining a balance between its teaching and research missions. It holds more than 60 research chairs, 40 recognized research teams and centers in areas such as pharmacology, biotechnology, materials, aerospace,microelectronics,environment,education,electrochemistry,acoustics and superconductivity, among other fields. The university ranks first in Quebec and second in Canada for the amount of royalties received from inventions by its professors.
There are also 4 research institutes: the Centre for the Characterization of materials, the Environment and Sustainable Development Observatory, the Pharmacology Institute and the Research Centre on Aging.
