Opened in 1908 as a board-governed public institution, the University of Alberta has grown to be one of CanadaÂ’s foremost research-intensive universities, with external research funding in 2004-05 of more than $415 million. The University of Alberta main campus and Campus Saint-Jean are located in Edmonton, the vibrant, cosmopolitan capital of the province of Alberta. In a metropolitan area with close to one million people, Edmonton showed the fastest economic growth of CanadaÂ’s major cities in 2004 when its economy increased by an impressive 6.2 per cent. In partnership with industry and government, the University of Alberta plays a pivotal role in advancing the economic prosperity of Edmonton and Alberta. On July 1, 2004, the Augustana Campus became the newest campus and faculty of the University of Alberta. Augustana is located in Camrose, Alberta, 90 kilometers southeast of Edmonton.
