Over 30,000 students attend the University of Amsterdam. From its original focus on Trade and Philosophy the original Athenaeum Illustre has expanded into a comprehensive university featuring almost all academic disciplines.

The University of Amsterdam is one of the major comprehensive universities in Europe with a budget of 560 million EUR. It has a strong internationalisation programme featuring active student exchange programmes, Bachelors programmes and over 100 Masters study programmes taught in English. The UvA currently has students, staff and researchers from over 80 countries and offers a truly multi-national environment.

The university comprises seven faculties covering humanities, social and behavioural sciences, law, economics and business, medicine, dentistry and science.

The UvA offers a comprehensive range of academic programmes with multiple options to pursue studies within or across disciplines all the way from Bachelor through to PhD level and further. UvA staff publish over 7,500 scholarly articles each year. The university's fundamental academic research is world-class in many respects. The applied research programmes are frequently of an interdisciplinary nature and often focus on social issues.

The UvA offers an inspiring, broadly oriented international academic environment where staff and students can develop their capacities to the fullest. The UvA is characterised by a critical, creative and international atmosphere, open-minded and strongly engaged with society. Because the university is located in both historic and modern buildings spread throughout the heart of the city, it forms an integral part of the intellectual and cultural life of Amsterdam.
Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff FTE: 3,232
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.

Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. HSP Huygens Programme. 32 available @ EUR 0

The prestigious HSP Huygens programme is open to excellent students from all countries of the world. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies. PhD applications can only be accepted from excellent students from Croatia and Turkey.

The Dutch Ministry for Education, Culture and Science has made seven million euros per year available for international excellent students coming to the Netherlands under the HSP Huygens programme. There is no fixed number of available scholarships, but the actual number is determined by the total cost of the variable components of the scholarships.

The Dutch Ministry has reserved part of the total budget for excellent students following programmes in Dutch language and literature (Neerlandistiek). The candidates of Neerlandistiek must meet the same criteria as all other candidates.

Application Process
When applying for the scholarship you will need a HSP nomination letter from the University of Amsterdam. The first step you need to take is to apply for the study programme of your choice via the programme manager and ask the programme manager for a HSP nomination letter. The nomination letter will only be offered to excellent students.

Being accepted in the programme does not mean that you will automatically receive a nomination letter. The programme manager and/or the academic supervisor decides which candidate(s) will receive a letter.

The programme manager sends the nomination letter to the HSP-coordinator, who will then transfer it to the candidate by e-mail. The candidate can only complete his of her file with this letter and send all documents to the HSP office at the NUFFIC in The Hague.

See the NUFFIC website (http://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/scholarships/worldwide/hsp-huygens-programme) for more information on the scholarships and the application procedure.
