University College, Bristol opened in October 1876 with two professors, five lecturers and 99 students. It was the first college in the country to admit men and women on an equal footing. The University's reputation grew steadily throughout the 1930s, it became known as an institution with formidable academic strengths and an unshakeable commitment to quality - characteristics that are just as apparent now.

The University organises its academic affairs in some 45 departments and 15 research centers which are arranged in art, engineering, science, medicine & dentistry, medical &veterinary science, social science& law faculties. Bristol has a diverse range of academic subjects on offer to prospective students, 46 in total. The level of support for the students is high and many achieve the high standards on which the University's reputation is built.

The university is located in the heart of Bristol, one of the UK's most beautiful and inspiring cities. Most of our 370 buildings are located in the heart of this lively, creative, multicultural city. A short stroll from the University precinct down Park Street with its stylish shops will take you to Bristol's beautiful Harbourside. There you will find all kinds of diversions, from boats to bars and from cinemas to street art.It's also a very lively place with a vibrant cultural and social scene. the university is truly international, with students from over 100 countries, meaning the university benefits from an extraordinary diverse culture.

Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence

Bristol is regarded as one of the premier league universities in the UK, renowned for excellence in both teaching and research. With 17,000 students from over 100 countries, together with more than 5,500 staff, the University of Bristol is a moderately sized but vibrant institution. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, over 61% of the research work assessed in 48 research fields has been awarded either the top 4* rating, defined as ‘world leading’ or the 3* rating, classed as ‘internationally excellent’. The QAA awarded the University an average score of ‘excellent’ in teaching quality.
In terms of the number of UK/EU applications per undergraduate place, Bristol is arguably the most popular university in the country. It is located in the heart of the city from which it grew, but is a significant player on the world stage as well as a major force in the economic, social and cultural life of South West England.
Within easy walking distance from the University precinct, the city centre boasts shopping malls, international restaurants and food stores, as well as theatres, cinemas, museums, concert halls and other entertainment centres. The atmosphere in Bristol is relaxed, with a vibrant youth culture that compliments academic life.
All student accommodation is within walking distance of the precinct and the University guarantees accommodation for all new full-time international students who meet the specified deadline.
Bristol has its own international airport, with direct flights to continental Europe and links to long haul destinations via Amsterdam and Paris. Situated 100 kilometres from London, travel to the capital is easy, with regular direct train services taking only 90 minutes.

Finance and Scholarships

The International Office at Bristol has approximately 15 international undergraduate scholarships (for selected countries including India) and 10 international taught postgraduate scholarships (for students from any country) to give away each year. These scholarships are for students who are liable to pay the higher rate tuition fees.

Entry Requirements

Most of our taught masters programmes require a first class pass (60% or higher) from an Indian university.
Potential undergraduate candidates should note that the majority of our programmes require average Year 12 grades of 80% or above. A typical offer for a programme that requires AAB at A Level would be 80% overall, with 85% in the relevant one or two subjects.
