Described by the Sunday Times as 'an intellectual powerhouse with a world-class reputation', UCL is consistently ranked as one of the top multifaculty universities in the UK and features in the top 5 universities worldwide.

UCL is a multidisciplinary university with an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching across the academic spectrum, with subjects spanning the sciences, arts, social sciences and biomedicine. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) UCL was rated the best research university in London, and third in the UK overall, for the number of its submissions which were considered of world-leading quality. The RAE confirmed UCL’s multidisciplinary research strength with outstanding results achieved across the subjects, ranging from Biomedicine, Science and Engineering, and the Built Environment to Laws, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

Teaching at UCL is 'research-led', meaning that the programmes we offer reflect the very latest research and are often taught by academic staff members who are world-leaders in their fields. UCL has one of the best staff-student ratios in the UK and places a strong emphasis on small group teaching.

As well as being dynamic and intellectually challenging, UCL offers a very cosmopolitan and international environment in which to study. Over 30% of our students are from outside the UK, coming from nearly 140 different countries. UCL also attracts academic staff from around the globe, and international staff and students alike are welcomed for the different perspectives and diversity they bring to teaching and learning at UCL.

The university is located on a compact site in the very heart of London and is surrounded by the greatest concentration of libraries, museums, archives, cultural institutions and professional bodies in Europe.

THE GRADUATE SCHOOL
Over 7000 of our students are studying at graduate level, which is one of the largest populations of graduate students at any UK university.
UCL offers an extremely diverse range of graduate qualifications, from taught Masters and shorter programmes to MPhils, PhDs and specialist doctorates.

On entry, all UCL graduate students become members of the Graduate School, which offers opportunities that few, if any, UK institutions can match. The aims of the UCL Graduate School are:

- To ensure that UCL continues to be at the forefront of graduate education and research; and
- To enhance the student experience through offering the finest environment for personal and academic development.

Furthermore, the Graduate School offers a number of Research and Master's scholarships to outstanding students. Details of the full range of UCL scholarships available for students can be found on our website at www.ucl.ac.uk/scholarships

Whatever the reasons for pursuing graduate study, whether for career development or subject interest, the UCL Careers Service can help students to realise their full potential, and offers specialist support for graduate students. We strive to ensure that students are equipped not just with subject knowledge but with other highly valued skills which mean that UCL graduates are extremely employable, and are targeted by the worlds leading employers.

UCL offers a stimulating and richly rewarding experience for graduate students who want to study in one of the worlds leading centres of research and teaching.

Number of Faculty Staff FTE: 3,973
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.
