University of Colorado, Boulder
The University of Colorado at Boulder is the major research university in the Rocky Mountain region. Its Graduate School offers 48 doctoral and 61 masterÂ’s degree programs. It awards graduate degrees in a full range of disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, physical and biological sciences, fine arts, and performing arts, as well as in engineering, journalism, business, music, and education. The Graduate School provides students with a wide scope of research opportunities. It oversees seven research institutes on campus that conduct interdisciplinary investigations in such areas as environmental studies, space studies, and behavioral science. Two such investigations resulted in the 2001 and 2005 Nobel Prizes in physics. Students also take part in the research programs of faculty and in cooperative research programs with federal agencies, laboratories, and private industries. Faculty received $266.2 million in sponsored research awards in the 2007 fiscal year, part of which helps support the work of hundreds of graduate students. Sponsored research gives graduate students access to high-quality equipment and fosters collaboration with world-class faculty. Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence

The university has a proud academic tradition, with four Nobel laureates in the sciences, seven MacArthur “genius grant” recipients, 94 Fulbright scholars since 1982, and more than 50 combined members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Education, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Sciences. CU-Boulder was ranked 34th among the world’s universities, both public and private, in a 2007 survey by the Institute for Higher Education at Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. The university produced 94 Peace Corps volunteers in 2008, the third most among all U.S. colleges and universities.

Tuition charged is affected by residency status, degree, and number of credit hours. For in-state (Colorado resident) graduate students enrolled full-time, average tuition (plus mandatory student fees) per academic year (two semesters) ranges from $8,943 (College of Arts and Sciences) to $13,889 (Leeds School of Business); tuition and fees for the law school are $21,705. For international and other out-of-state (non-resident) graduate students enrolled full-time, average tuition (plus mandatory student fees) per academic year (two semesters) ranges from $24,135 (College of Arts and Sciences) to $26,009 (Leeds School of Business); tuition and fees for the law school are $32,217. Basic TOEFL/IELTS requirements

Minimum required TOEFL scores vary for different graduate programs; please see http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/international/admission/grad-requirements.html. You are not required to submit the TOEFL if your native language is English or you have completed at least one year of full-time study at a U.S. institution, or at an institution in a country where English is the native language, at the time you apply, and within two years from your desired admission term.

Accommodation

Please see http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/graduate/studentlife/living.html and, of particular interest to international students, http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/international/aboutcu.html.

Accommodation Range

Most graduate students typically live in one of the many apartments, condominiums, or houses in Boulder or nearby communities. Housing expenses vary greatly depending on location, size and type of accommodations, and number of people sharing a house or apartment. On-campus housing options for graduate students include Bear Creek apartments at Williams Village. Rates for these fully furnished apartments range from $377/month for a two-bedroom apartment (double occupancy; 12-month lease) to $1,078/month for a one-bedroom apartment (12-month lease); for more detailed information, see http://bearcreek.colorado.edu/rates_plans/index.html. For families, married couples, and single parents, the university maintains furnished and unfurnished one-, two-, or three-bedroom apartments a short walk from campus. A limited number of efficiency or studio apartments are available to single graduate students who are 21 or older. Prices here are less expensive than in the Boulder community. Eligible applicants must be registered as full-time students. Only students and members of their immediate families may reside here. Rates range from $566/month to $1199/month. For more information, please see http://housing.colorado.edu/fh/index.cfm.

Finance and Scholarships

The Graduate School offers University of Colorado fellowships, diversity fellowships, and Chancellor's Graduate Fellowships. University of Colorado fellowships are awarded to entering and continuing regular degree-seeking graduate students on the basis of academic promise or academic success. Students are nominated by their departments. Most offers of financial aid (teaching and research appointments and fellowships) are limited to PhD students. The Chancellor's Graduate Fellowship Program, instituted in 1984-85, attracts outstanding students for graduate study at the University of Colorado. Selected students receive a stipend of $20,000 for two academic years and a full waiver of all tuition and fees. Recipients must be entering master's or doctoral degree programs and be nominated by their department. Fellowships, traineeships, and scholarships are also offered by some departments. Applications for financial support are due in the departments by the announced deadlines; most departments must receive applications by January 15. For more information, please see http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/graduate/finances/assistance.html.

Entry Requirements

Students seeking admission to a CU-Boulder master’s or doctoral program apply directly to the appropriate department rather than the Graduate School. Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate School at CU-Boulder has established minimum standards for graduate admission. Applicants must:
1. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
2. Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
3. Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
4. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average. Note: Applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still secure regular admission if they have completed 12 semester hours of relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 average.
5. They meet additional requirements for admission established by the major department.

Language Support

The International English Center at CU-Boulder helps advance the mission of the university through English language training, orientation to university customs, academic preparation, and an introduction to life in the United States. Please see http://www.colorado.edu/iec/index.html for more information.

Non-English Language Requirements

Varies by department. For international and other out-of-state (non-resident) graduate students enrolled full-time, average tuition fees per academic year (two semesters) range from $24,135 to $26,009 (tuition plus mandatory student fees); tuition and fees for the law school are $32,217.
