To study at postgraduate level, you need to have a first degree in an appropriate subject, or a qualification or experience which is accepted as equivalent.
The usual qualification you will need for admission to study for a research degree and for some Masters programmes is a first degree with an excellent or very good classification (equivalent to first or upper second class Honours in the UK).
Courses are held at the Institute for Applied Language Studies (IALS) during the summer for overseas students whose studies start in September.
They provide a thorough preparation for postgraduate study programmes and are of four, seven, ten and 15 weeks’ duration. If students require a longer course in English, it is possible to register for the intensive language courses, which run from September to May each year. These include an Academic Study option specially planned for overseas students.
During the academic year, the Institute runs special programmes, free of charge, on behalf of the University, for postgraduate students registered for a degree who need help with their English. Topics include listening to lectures, effective reading, discussion skills, writing assignments and examination answers.
Awarded annually, on application, to a successful applicant for full-time or part-time postgraduate study in English Language.
Candidates must give evidence of reasonable attempts to obtain alternative funding through AHRC, SORSAS or equivalent bodies. Applicants proposing to study for the degree of MSc as well as graduates from the University of Edinburgh are preferred but not exclusive candidates for the Bursary. Selectors reserve the right to invoke the criterion of academic merit.
