Founded in 1413, St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland. By the middle of the sixteenth century the University had three colleges - St Salvator's (1450), St Leonard's (1511), and St Mary's (1538): the buildings of St Mary's College and St Salvator's Chapel both date from this period.

St Andrews is Scotland's first University and the third oldest in the UK. For almost six centuries, we have proudly upheld the tradition of academic excellence, attracting scholars of international repute and students from all over the world.

Today, we continue to offer the latest in teaching and research, all within a superbly picturesque mediaeval setting. Although St Andrews is not a campus University, it has grown and developed with the town and is now comfortably integrated.

The University provides an invigorating intellectual climate in which staff have close contacts with one another and with colleagues in other U.K. and overseas universities and research establishments. All Schools in both the sciences and the arts are actively involved in pushing back the frontiers of knowledge.

Physically the University is closely integrated with the town; the modern purpose-built library and many academic Schools are located centrally. The growth in physical and mathematical sciences has been accommodated at the North Haugh on the edge of St Andrews. A modern sports centre with adjacent playing fields and halls of residence are also located in this area.

St Andrews is relatively small, despite being a "city", with a basic population approaching 17,000. The University population (staff and students) numbers nearly 9,000. On average one in three people you see in the street have something to do with the University. You start to feel very quickly that you belong.

Faculty
Number of Faculty Staff FTE: 873
Total number of academic faculty staff who are responsible for planning, directing and undertaking teaching only, research only or both teaching and research. Please include: vice-chancellors, deputy vice-chancellors, principals, professors, heads of school, associate professors, principal lecturers, tutors or postdoctoral researchers. Please exclude research assistants*, PhD students who contribute to teaching, and exchange scholars or visiting faculty staff who are members of another university. * The important distinction for us is that staff counted as 'research only' should be academically involved in that research and should be likely to publish research outputs. A research assistant, in our understanding, is any individual who is not doing own research and is therefore not likely to publish own research outputs. Said individual is (only) involved in research in terms of operation execution , such as lab technician or equipment operator.

Number of academic faculty staff who are of foreign nationality. The term 'international' is hereby determined by citizenship. For EU countries, this includes all foreign nationals, even if from another EU state. In Hong Kong, this includes professors from Mainland China. Inclusion and exclusion mirrors those for academic faculty staff. In case of dual citizenship, the 'deciding' criteria should be 'citizenship obtained through birth', basically first passport obtained.

As for language students, if the language students take up a particular language course that is outlined as 'undergraduate degree program' they should be included under 'international undergraduate students' . Language students who take part in a course not contributing to a degree qualification should be counted under 'Total International Students'.
Average International Undergraduate Fees £ GBP 10,950

Main claims to international academic or non-academic excellence

The University of St Andrews is not only Scotland's first University (founded 1413) but also its leading university, not just on our own judgement, but according to independent assessment. For almost six centuries, we have proudly upheld the tradition of academic excellence.

We are one of the UK's leading research-led institutions, attracting scholars of international repute and students from all over the world.

In the 18 months alone we have been ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th amongst all UK institutions by The Guardian (2009 rankings), The Times (2010 rankings) and The Sunday Times (2008 rankings). We are regularly ranked highly in the National Student Satisfaction Survey. Most recently, the University enjoyed a very strong set of results when the latest RAE scores were announced. 92% of our acadmic staff were submitted for inclusion in the assessment and our scores shows the internationally-renowned strength and depth of research work undertaken in each department.

Range of Fees

£1850 to £13300, depending on subject and status (part-time VS full-time). Please note that International students cannot study on a part-time basis.

Basic TOEFL/IELTS requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency - IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 600PBT/100IBT or Cambridge CPE grade C. Applicants who hold an IELTS 6.5 or 6.0 may be considered. In such circumstances, language training can be provided and applicants may be asked to attend the University's 4 or 10 week Pre Sessional English programme as a condition of admission. Further detailed information on English Language requirements can be found on our English Language Teaching Centre web pages.

If you are an international student who has been taught solely and wholly in English for the duration of your undergraduate degree (at least 3 years or more), it is unlikely you will need to provide evidence of English proficiency however this decision is made entirely at the discretion of the selection panel having considered your application and supporting documents as a whole. Where there is doubt, an IELTS/TOEFL score or language training will be required.

Some Academic Schools offer a number of full or partial studentships each year, made possible through University and/or Research Council funding. These vary from Home or Overseas fee waivers alone to fee coverage plus a full maintenance stipend at research council levels. Most funding is offered on a competitive basis.

Please note: The offer of a university place to undertake postgraduate research or study does not carry with it the guarantee of financial support.

Entry Requirements

Admission to a masters/research programme is normally on the basis of a good bachelor's degree with Honours from a UK university (or its overseas equivalent) in a relevant degree or a relevant postgraduate qualification. Final overall grade examples include 2:1 (UK), 2:2 or B+ (Europe), 3.6 (USA), 80% (Asia). Specific guidance is available on request.

The degree of MD (Medicine), requires a medical qualification that is recognised by the UK General Medical Council.

Language Support

We have a dedicated English Language Teaching Centre and full support is available for students whose first language is not English.
