Overview
Basic TOEFL/IELTS
Average GRE scores for successful applicants are Verbal 600, Quantatative 780, Analytic 760, Physics Subject 880. Students coming directly from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate proficiency in English via the TOEFL exam. A successful applicant's typical score might be 600 (250 for computer-based tests) and above, however, no minimum score is required. Caltech does not require a At this time, we do not accept the IELTS as a substitute for TOEFL.
English Language Support
Caltech offers a course for English as Second Language (ESL) students. This course of study is designed specifically for students whose native language is not English.
Distance Learning
Caltech offers option for earning course credit at off-campus locations via cable television, internet, satellite, classes, videotapes, correspondence courses, or other means.
Accommodation
Caltech has eight undergraduate "houses," which are designed like dorms, but have the intimate and collegial atmosphere of a home. Students are involved in choosing their house at the beginning of freshman year after participating in "rotation," the process of learning about each of the houses.
Yes. Students are not required to live on campus after their first year, but most do. Caltech guarantees housing for all four years, and all but a few students choose to live either in the houses or in Caltech-owned and Caltech-adjacent homes and apartments.

Finance and Scholarships
The Caltech Financial Aid Office, as well as other sponsoring organisations, strives to assist students on a continuing basis with their financial needs. Many opportunities for additional financial aid and scholarships are in place. Some of which are:
- The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) which offers a variety of different scholarship programs for Hispanic American Students.
- The National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles provides a variety of scholarships year-round for women, regardless of religious belief or ethnic background, who reside in Los Angeles County.
- The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation offers scholarships for the students whose parents served in the Marines.
- Sallie Mae Fund applications are now available for a variety of scholarships. These scholarships are available to low income and minority students to increase access to higher education.
