Our aim is to share our passion for research through an education that is firmly anchored in initiative and open-mindedness. The Ecole normale superieure de Lyon is a place of reactivity and innovation in teaching and research where researchers, teaching faculty and students work side by side daily. Our academic programs, designed in cooperation with the Universite Claude Bernard Lyon 1 and other higher education institutions of the Rhone-Alpes region, are in close interaction with the research conducted in the thirteen internationally renowned laboratories located at the school. The ENS Lyon, like other French "Grandes Ecoles", occupies a special niche in France's higher education system. After beginning their higher education elsewhere, students who successfully complete the rigorous selection process enter the ENS Lyon in the last year of their undergraduate studies. In actuality, the first year of studies at the ENS Lyon is considered more as a "pre-master" than as the end of undergraduate studies. Even though they do acquire their undergraduate degree at the end of their first year at the school, students don't come to the ENS Lyon to finish an undergraduate degree. They come to do their graduate studies in a high-level research oriented program. Our students, after thorough preparation, become privileged actors in teaching and research in public or semi-public organizations and in the private sector. Research innovation and daring, strong specialized knowledge and openness towards other disciplines for teaching are the ideals which accompany the commitment of those who study and work at the Ecole normale superieure de Lyon. The motivation behind this interdisciplinary scientific education is the construction of tomorrow's world.
