Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme


Under the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme ETH Zurich awards merit-based scholarships to excellent students wishing to pursue a Master's degree.


The scholarship covers the full study and living costs during the Master degree course. In addition, the programme offers students the opportunity to carry out a research or development project on a topic of their choice.


Who can apply?


Application for an Excellence Scholarship is open both to ETH students and students from other universities wishing to pursue their Master's degree at ETH Zurich. The scholarship can be awarded to students with very good performance in their bachelor study who belong to the best of their class.


The application consists of



  • an application form, including

  • a letter of motivation

  • a Pre-proposal for your Master's thesis

  • letters of recommendation from two professors

If you are applying for more than one Master programme, please submit a separate application form for each degree programme for which you wish to be considered for an Excellence Scholarship and Opportunity Award. 



Scholarship amount and duration


The Excellence Scholarship consists of a grant covering living and study expenses (CHF 1,750 per month) as well as a tuition fee waiver. The scholarship is awarded for the regular duration of study of the student's Master programme (three or four semesters). The Excellence Scholarship is awarded independently of the scholarship holders’ financial situation.

Basic TOEFL/IELTS

Master programs: Skills corresponding to level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages is required for the language(s) of instruction (English and/or German).

Accommodation

- Dormitory accommodation managed by the Student Housing Association Zurich.
- University Housing Office acts as broker for private accommodation.

Price Range of Accommodation

450-600 Swiss francs (350-470 euro) per month for a room in shared accommodation.

Finance and Scholarships

Education at ETH Zurich is government funded, so all students - Swiss and foreign - pay the same modest tuition fees. For living costs, including accommodation, food, health insurance, local transport, students need to budget a minimum of 1750 Swiss francs (1350 euro) per month.
ETH Zurich's Excellence Scholarship and Opportunity Program offers full scholarships for outstanding students.

Doctoral students are usually employed as research assistant.

ETH Zurich does not offer scholarships for international Bachelor students.

Entry Requirements

Master programs: the equivalent of an ETH Bachelor degree from a recognized university. Students with degrees that only partially corresponds to an ETH Bachelor, may be admitted with the additional requirement to complete up to 60 credits (two semesters) from the corresponding Bachelor program.
