Established in 1924, the University of Milano is one of the youngest of Italys great universities, although on its establishment it incorporated several institutions that can boast more than two centuries of history, giving todays university all the prestige that derives from a lasting heritage of medical, scientific and humanistic studies at the very highest of levels. Over the years the University of Milano has succeeded in maintaining a skilful blend of tradition and innovation, adapting to the requirements of a fast-growing society. A generalist university that manages to provide both teaching and research, the University of Milano is distinguished by the large variety of disciplinary fields included within its framework. The University of Milans nine Faculties offer more than 130 study courses, which can be divided into the universitys four macro disciplinary areas: Social Sciences and Humanities, Economics and Law, Natural Sciences, and Medicine and Healthcare. The University of Milano is one of the largest universities in Italy in terms of teaching staff and research activities, with almost 150 units including Departments and Research Centres. The broad range of subjects taught, which currently consists of 79 Undergraduate programs, 9 Single cycle Masters programs, 57 Masters programs, 20 Doctoral Schools, and several Advanced Professional Qualifications programs, attracts students from the Region of Lombardy, the rest of Italy and the whole world. The student population numbered more than 60.000 in the academic year 2009/2010. The Universitys research and teaching activities have developed over the years and have received important international recognitions. The University is the only Italian member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), a prestigious group of twenty two research-intensive European Universities. It has also been awarded the following ranking positions: -1st in Italy, 21st in Europe and 77th in the world (Taiwan Higher Education & Accreditation Council 2009); -1st in Italy, 12th in Europe and 42nd in the world (Leiden - Centre for Science & Technology Studies 2009); -between 1st and 3rd in Italy, between 34th and 56th in Europe and between 101st and 151st in the world (Shangai - ARWU - Jiao Tong University 2010); -2nd in Italy and 235th in the world (Times Higher Education - THE 2010). Located in one of the most industrialised geographical areas in Europe at the crossroads of East-West and North-South economic development, the University of Milano operates in a strongly business-oriented environment covering both domestic and foreign markets and where the progress of knowledge goes hand-in-hand with the transfer of results to the industry world. This constitutes a priority for a university playing a decisive role in increasing the competitiveness of enterprises through innovation by generating economic and social benefits at international level.
