About University of Calcutta

UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA

Established 1857  ·  Kolkata, India

"Advancement of Learning"

A Legacy of Intellectual Eminence

Established on 24 January 1857, the University of Calcutta is the first modern multidisciplinary university in South Asia. Over 168 years, it has grown from an examining body — with a jurisdiction once spanning Kabul to Myanmar — into one of India's foremost public research universities. Its motto, Advancement of Learning, is not merely an aspiration; it is a record of achievement. The University has nurtured six Nobel Laureates, including Rabindranath Tagore and C.V. Raman. Among its historic affiliates are the Calcutta Medical College (1835), the first medical college in Asia; the first Homeopathy College in India (1880); and Bethune College (1879), the first college for women in Asia — a lineage that speaks to the University's founding commitment to access, equity, and excellence.

Academic Architecture: Breadth and Depth

The University's eight specialised faculties house over 68 departments and 24 Research Centres across 15 campuses  in Kolkata, forming a disciplinary mosaic of rare breadth.

The Faculty of Arts, based at the Asutosh Siksha Prangan and Sahid Khudiram Siksha Prangan, spans classical languages — Bengali, Sanskrit, Pali, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, and Urdu; modern languages — English, French, Russian; Linguistics, Buddhist Studies — alongside History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Museology, and Archaeology. Notably, the Department of Economics, located at the BT Road Campus, is also part of this Faculty; it is home to the Centre of Urban Economics, which drives policy-relevant research on India's rapidly evolving urban landscape.

The Faculty of Science at Rasbehari Siksha Prangan and Taraknath Palit Siksha Prangan encompasses Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Anthropology, Merine Science, Atmospheric Sciences, Environment Science, Psychology, Geography and Geology, and houses the S.N. Pradhan Centre for Neurosciences. Its researchers have secured an impressive portfolio of patents and international collaborations.

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology bridges theoretical science and industrial application. The Department of Radio Physics and Electronics honours the legacy of Sisir Kumar Mitra, whose field station at Haringhata — now home to a Stratosphere Troposphere radar facility — remains a landmark of indigenous scientific enterprise. The Faculty also offers specialisations in Computer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Applied Optics and Photonics, and Jute and Fibre Technology — the last addressing the growing field of Technical Textiles and reinforcing the University's ties to Bengal's industrial heritage.

The Faculty of Law at Hazra Campus, one of the oldest in the country, has produced numerous Chief Justices of India. The Faculty of Commerce, Social Welfare and Business Management draws a large and dynamic student body, with active industry engagement including collaboration with the Calcutta Stock Exchange. The Institute of Agricultural Science focuses on Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Physiology, Genetics and Seed Science, tailored to the region's ecological conditions. The Faculty of Education, Journalism and Library Science addresses the modern imperatives of communication and information including Teachers’ training, and Library management. The Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, along with the Department of Home Science — housed at the Viharilal Campus — adds a vital creative and domestic sciences dimension to the University's identity.   Comfortable hostels facilitate students boarding and studying.

Research, Innovation, and Social Impact

The University's research ecosystem includes the Centre for Research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CRNN), a world-class facility for atomic-level research; the Women's Studies Research Centre, among the first of its kind in India; and the A.K. Choudhury School of Information Technology. Together, these centres reflect a commitment to scholarship that is both globally competitive and socially conscious.

Community, Culture, and the Road Ahead

The College Street Campus is home to the Asutosh Museum of Indian Art — the first university museum in India — and a Central Library housing over a million books and rare manuscripts, recently opened to all readers as a gesture of democratic scholarship. A diverse student community, drawn from across India and the world, ensures that intellectual exchange here is as vibrant as it is rigorous. As the University of Calcutta looks forward, it remains anchored to its founding mission: the active, inclusive, and purposeful advancement of learning — for the nation, and for the world.

Cost of Living

Kolkata is famous for its affordability. Compared to other major Indian cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, or Bengaluru, it is still cheaper as far as most things are concerned. This has turned the city into an attractive option for students seeking a cost-effective lifestyle. The city has a rich cultural heritage, exquisite architecture, and a vibrant cultural atmosphere, all within economical living standards.

Accommodation is usually the biggest expense. For students, hostel facilities are often available (both private and institutional). Hostels and other accommodations can range from ₹12,000 to ₹30,000 per year. There are more expensive and luxurious options available. Private paying guest accommodations or private hostels usually cost between ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 per month. For those looking for independent living, an apartments can cost between ₹8,000 and ₹30,000 per month. Rent in the city centre is generally higher than the suburbs. Food expenses in Kolkata is relatively lesser. For students, basic monthly food and mess charges are estimated to be around ₹2,000 to ₹4,000. Eating out can cost approximately ₹50 to ₹120 per meal at inexpensive restaurants. For those who prefer to cook, groceries for a small family can cost about ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 per month. Cooking at home can significantly reduce expenses.

Kolkata boasts an extensive and affordable public transportation network, including buses, local trains, metro rail, occasional trams, and auto-rickshaws. A one-way public transport ticket typically costs around ₹15, and a monthly pass can range from ₹250 to ₹500. Monthly transportation expenses for students are generally below ₹1,000. The metro system is particularly well-connected, linking various parts of the city. There are app-cabs available throughout the day, and sparsely at night. High speed internet expenses are also negligible, ranging between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000. An estimated ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per month should cover personal expenses and study materials for students.

Healthcare is of various costs. Public hospitals offer free treatment, while private hospital appointments can cost ₹500 to ₹2,000 and more. Health insurance is highly recommended and can range from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 annually. Government Sponsored Colleges have very low fees, but private institutions can be very expensive.

Kolkata offers a balanced lifestyle that allows all to manage their finances effectively without stretching their budget too much.
