Founded in 1880, VU University Amsterdam combines excellence in scholarship and teaching at undergraduate, graduate and professional levels with adherence to the highest ethical values going back to its Christian roots. VU fosters the intellectual development of its students and prepares them for active involvement in a global society. VU stands for Vrije Universiteit, or Free University, free from any form of political or religious interference.
An international community
With some 2,000 academic staff, VU University offers 55 Bachelor's programmes (two in English) and 89 Master's programmes (50 in English, one in German and one in French) to 23,000 students from all over the world. The atmosphere is conducive to study and the teaching staff are easily accessible, making for an inspirational educational setting which prepares the students for the increasingly global job market. Student mentors and 'study buddies' help newcomers settle into the university life and continue to complete their degree.
Research and teaching
VU University Amsterdam employs many researchers who are among the best in their respective fields, and for several years has been one of the leading academic research centres in Europe. Balancing outstanding research with student-centred teaching is the hallmark of VU University across all the thirteen faculties, made possible by the high staff-to-student ratio. Unlike many other countries, the Netherlands does not have a university ranking system. However, a range of studies have shown VU University Amsterdam to be one of the best in the country.
In the heart of the cultural capital
Celebrated for its glorious Golden Age history and architectural charm, Amsterdam is one of Europe's best loved and most visited capitals. Students come here for a city rich in learning, art, music, sports, and for a unique European urban experience.
