North-Western State Medical University named after Mechnikov

North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov was founded on October 12, 2011 as a result of a successful merger of two ancient Russian medical academies. Thanks to this, the University has become the successor of a long history, rich experience, age-old traditions of two medical institutes of St. Petersburg at once.

The founder of the University is the Ministry of Health of Russia, which means that all services provided here are properly controlled at the state level.

The uniqueness of the University lies in the continuous program of the educational process, which includes pre-university training, higher education, and then advanced training or retraining. 

The University is developing in 3 directions: high quality education, innovative scientific activities and effective medical care.

University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught in Russian and English including bachelor’s degrees, specialist degrees, master’s programs, clinical residency programs, PhD programs and CME courses. 

Specialist degrees:

• General Medicine (6 years)
• Preventive Medicine (6 years)
• Dentistry (5 years)
• Pediatrics (6 years)

Bachelor’s degree:

• Nursing care (4 years)

Master’s program:

• Public Health (2 years)

In 2020 University launched MD course in General Medicine for international students, partly implemented in English.

University offers more than 870 CME programs, Summer and Winter School, preparatory courses for Russian and foreign citizens.

The majority of the teaching staff are practical physicians, including 7 academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 37 honored doctors of Russia, 751 candidates of medical sciences and 380 doctors of medical sciences.

Scientific activity

Research is carried out across 11 research institutes and laboratories:

• Research Institute of Medical Mycology (a modern scientific, educational and clinical complex, the only one in its profile in Russia)
• Research Institute of Rheumatology
• 8 research laboratories
• University Scientific Dental Centre

The University has implemented 45 international scientific and technological projects in cooperation with the leading scientific and educational healthcare institutions of Eastern and Western Europe, China, Japan and the USA. Having 138 patents for inventions and utilite models, university has leading positions among medical universities.

Medical care

The University owns its own network of clinics with a full range of medical services. All professors who train the new generation of doctors practice themselves, and, conversely, all outstanding doctors share their knowledge with future doctors.

International development

The University maintains a wide range of contacts with higher education institutions around the world. Today NWSMU has more than 60 partner universities around the world. These networks allow our students to practice abroad within the student mobility.
