Our admission criteria

Whether you’re applying as a domestic or international student, you will need to:


Undergraduate study


Your qualifications must meet the university’s minimum admission requirements for:

  • senior secondary or post-secondary school qualifications (vocational education and training, associate diplomas or degrees or an approved tertiary preparation course), or
  • tertiary qualifications in Australia or overseas (one standard full-time year of study in a degree program at another Australian or international higher education institution).


Postgraduate study

You will need to have:

  • an ANU-approved bachelor’s degree, or
  • another qualification recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Academic entry requirements

The Australian National University’s main campus is in the Canberra suburb of Acton, just 10 minutes’ walk from the city centre.

As well as modern lecture halls, laboratories, several libraries and a range of student residences, the campus provides just about everything you’ll need during your studies, including cafes, bars, child care, gyms, medical services and supermarkets.

It is also beautiful and sustainable. Dotted with 10,000 trees, a creek and several park-like avenues, the campus sits at the base of Black Mountain and the Australian National Botanic Gardens on the land of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples.  You’ll regularly spot kangaroos, wallabies, ducks and koalas here.  

Just ten minutes’ walk away are Lake Burley Griffin, the National Museum of Australia and the city. Connecting them and other national cultural institutions to ANU is Canberra’s extensive network of bicycle paths, buses and trams.

Student life

You will find much to discover at ANU. Working closely with academics who are experts in their fields – some of whom have written your textbooks – you’ll develop skills through research, mentoring and the unique internships.

Many join the 5,000-plus students who choose to live on campus. Each residence has an array of social and pastoral care opportunities to help you settle in and form new friendships and networks. Classes, libraries, gyms and the city’s restaurants and nightlife are just a short walk or ride away.

You can take part in the university’s 150 cultural, social and educational clubs, which include a chess society, cooking, dance and debating clubs, a science revue and a sign language collective. If there isn’t a club that suits your interests, you can create your own.
