The second-largest city in the Czech Republic, Brno (pronounced Bir-no) is the historical capital and cultural hub of the Margraviate of Moravia.

It’s is also an important centre of higher education, with 13 universities located in the city. Some of the highest-ranked Czech universities are in Brno, including Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology, both of which feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2023.

It’s a friendly city

Brno is known for having friendly locals and for its wide range of cafés, restaurants and bars. The city ranks 28th this year in the student voice indicator and the student mix indicator, reflecting its sunny reputation amongst students.

The city offers an overall low cost of living and cheap tuition fees for international students.

Ranking joint 60th in the affordability indicator this year, Brno’s average cost of living and low tuition fees for international students make it a great place to study.

On average, tuition in Brno will cost international students around US$4,600.

A one bedroom apartment in Brno’s city center will cost around US$650 according to Numbeo. According to Numbeo, you should also factor in an extra US$635 per month for additional living costs.  

Life and culture in Brno

Brno is relatively undiscovered by tourists, but will certainly charm you with its medieval fortresses and castles, full of mysteries and providing material for numerous local legends.

Brno has a vibrant cultural life, with various museums, theatres and galleries located in the city, as well as the Brno Exhibition Centre, which is one of the largest exhibition centers in the world.  

Although now very much a modern city, Brno has also preserved many of its traditions, folklore, folk music, festivals and the traditional Moravian costumes.

Brno’s highest score is for student voice, reflecting the enjoyable student experience on offer. When asked to name the best things about Brno, one survey respondent identified its “Unique atmosphere, beauty, affordability, nice people, and culture.”

Career in Brno

Students looking to start their career in Brno after graduation will be happy to learn that salaries for entry level roles are incredibly competitive, particularly in contrast to the relatively low cost of living in the city.

Large branches of well-known accountancy and finance firms are located throughout Brno, offering plenty of jobs available for fresh graduates looking for work in the city.

Speaking English plus a second language such as French, Italian or German will give you an advantage over other graduates, as many of Brno’s firms are international.
