About Universidade Estadual de Maringá

The State University of Maringá (UEM) is located in the northeastern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, and stands as one of the leading public higher education institutions in the state. Founded in 1970, UEM has established itself as a national reference in teaching, research, extension, and technological innovation, fostering regional development and contributing significantly to professional training, scientific production, and cultural advancement.

The university’s structure comprises seven campuses located in the cities of Maringá, Umuarama, Cianorte, Goioerê, Diamante do Norte, Ivaiporã, and Cidade Gaúcha. UEM also maintains an Experimental Farm in the District of Iguatemi, used for teaching, research, and extension activities in agricultural and environmental sciences; an Advanced Research Base in Porto Rico, dedicated to studies in aquatic ecology and biodiversity; and an Aquaculture Research Center in the District of Floriano, recognized for developing sustainable aquaculture production technologies.

Currently, UEM offers 71 undergraduate programs, 61 specialization programs, 57 master’s programs, and 36 doctoral programs, covering nearly all major areas of knowledge. It was the first public university in Paraná to be evaluated under the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) program and ranks among the 20 Brazilian universities with the highest scientific and technological output, demonstrating the excellence and relevance of its academic work.

UEM currently conducts 708 ongoing research projects, developed by 1,339 researchers organized into 391 certified research groups, according to CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development). This strong research base reinforces the university’s presence in national and international networks of science, technology, and innovation.

Among its most impactful initiatives are:

  • the creation of solidarity economy cooperatives and municipal development projects promoted through the Unitrabalho Network and the Metropolitan Observatory;

  • the University Without Borders Program, which expands access to higher education and includes exclusive admission quotas for Indigenous populations;

  • the expansion of distance learning, with centers distributed across several regions of Paraná; and

  • the Open University for Senior Citizens Program, which provides educational, cultural, and social inclusion opportunities for the elderly.

UEM also plays a vital role in community outreach and public service, supporting over 130 municipalities through laboratory testing services, production and distribution of pharmaceuticals to healthcare units, and free medical assistance for low-income populations in the Maringá metropolitan area.

In addition to its academic and scientific mission, the university maintains key educational and training spaces, such as the Early Childhood Education Center, the Foreign Language and Japanese Language Centers, and the Application School, which serves more than 1,000 students annually and integrates pedagogical innovation with teacher training initiatives.

The University Hospital of Maringá (HUM), along with the Clinical Analysis Laboratory, the Hematology Center, and the Dental and Psychology Clinics, together provide over 200,000 patient services per year. These activities reaffirm UEM’s commitment to academic excellence, human development, and the scientific and social progress of Paraná and Brazil.
