Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is a renowned German university located in the heart of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany. Named after Johannes Gutenberg, whose invention of the mechanical movable-type printing press sparked a media revolution in the mid-15th century, the university follows his legacy by providing high-quality knowledge and education.


Since its founding in 1477 and its re-opening in May 1946, the generation and exchange of knowledge at Mainz University have guaranteed the university’s success and social relevance. Today, JGU is recognized worldwide for its achievements in science and the arts, research, and teaching.

 

As a comprehensive university, JGU offers a broad range of subjects from Accounting and Finance to World Literature. With 75 subjects to choose from in various combinations, JGU offers about  260 degree  programs to its 30,000 students. JGU values the diversity of its student body and strives to make students feel comfortable and supported throughout their studies. The university supports the student life cycle with a wide range of services – from student counseling and application to enrollment and course registration to graduation and the start of professional life.

 

JGU has demonstrated its research strength through its success in the German Excellence Strategy program. The PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence on Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions, and Structure of Matter is at the forefront of research in its field. Excellent ratings in national and international rankings confirm JGU's outstanding research achievements in other fields as well.

 

In 2015, Mainz University together with the universities in Frankfurt and Darmstadt founded the RHINE-MAIN UNIVERSITIES (RMU) alliance. The three universities have a combined total of more than 95,000 students and 1,500 professors and cooperate closely in research, learning, and teaching. As renowned research universities, the RMU shape the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main region as an internationally visible academic hub. Through coordination and close cooperation, the RMU promote improvements in research, teaching, knowledge exchange, and administration.
