American University of Sharjah (AUS) Undergraduate
American University of Sharjah (AUS) has earned a fortunate reputation throughout the Middle East region for its academic excellence and multicultural campus life.
AUS was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah. Today, a complex of stunning buildings on a beautiful campus is host to more than 5,000 students from 82 different nations, and a highly qualified, full-time faculty of more than 350 professionals.
Based on the American model of higher education and grounded in the culture of the Gulf region, AUS is a comprehensive, independent, non-profit, co-educational institution of higher education. Our mission aims to foster a community that embraces cultural diversity and whose members are committed to the ideals of open intellectual inquiry, ethical behavior and social and civic responsibility.
AUS offers 25 majors and 48 minors at the undergraduate level, one graduate certificate program and 13 master's degrees programs through the College of Architecture, Art and Design, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering and the School of Business and Management.
AUS is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It is licensed in the United States by the Department of Education of the State of Delaware. The university is also licensed by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and all undergraduate and graduate programs have been awarded either full or initial accreditation. All six of the bachelor's degree programs in our College of Engineering are accredited by ABET (http://www.abet.org) of the United States. The Bachelor of Architecture program of the College of Architecture, Art and Design is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB http://www.naab.org) of the United States. This is the first program outside of North America to receive this prestigious accreditation. NAAB is the only organization authorized to accredit professional degree programs in architecture in the United States. The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) as well as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degrees offered by the School of Business and Management are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) http://www.aacsb.edu .
Typical of the American system of higher education, AUS also places great stress on the development of the non-academic aspect of a student’s university life. Students are encouraged to participate in all manner of extra-curricular activities, form clubs and societies, stage events, work for the university student newspaper and literary magazine, and join the various sports and athletic teams on campus.
The AUS library is one of the most impressive buildings on campus. With an area of over 10,000 square meters, the state-of-the-art, three-story library is the first of its kind in the region. Since inception, the AUS library was envisaged as a leading center for research and knowledge, further strengthening the university’s role as a premier institution of higher learning in the Middle East.
While Arabic is the official language of the United Arab Emirates, the language of instruction at AUS is English. All classes and administrative functions are conducted in English.
