About ANDHRA UNIVERSITY
Established in 1926 under the Madras University Act, Andhra University stands as one of the oldest and the most prestigious educational institutions in India. It was the first university to be conceived as a residential, multi-disciplinary institution, integrating teaching, research, and affiliation under a single framework. Designed to serve the northern districts of the erstwhile Madras Presidency, the University has played a pioneering role in shaping higher education in the country. The University is a trendsetter in Higher Education and University-Administration in many respects. In 2023, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India have reaccredited Andhra University with an “A++” Grade with a Score of 3.74, on a four-point scale, valid until 2030. The University secured ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2006, ISO 9001:2008 Re-certified in 2016, and at Present it is further Re-certified as ISO 9001:2015 for its quality standards and maintenance of the same.
The University is a premier
institute of higher learning offering a variety of programs in the emerging
areas which have a direct impact on the economic growth and development of the
society. The University has distinguished itself by the introduction of several
courses which are innovative and first of their kind in the country. The
University has Six Constituent colleges – A.U. College of Arts & Commerce,
A.U. College of Science & Technology, A.U. College of Engineering (A), A.U.
College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar College of Law, A.U.
College of Engineering for Women, and A.U. School of Distance Education.
The University comprises 59 academic departments offering 25 undergraduate programs, 96 postgraduate programs, and Ph.D. programs. It also houses the several Advanced Research Centers and an Advanced Analytical Laboratory, which is recognized as a National Facility. Recently, the University earned a notable distinction by extending its educational outreach to the defence sector. Through multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Directorate General Resettlement, Government of India, the University offers certificate programs tailored for personnel from the Tri-Forces. These resettlement courses are designed to equip defence personnel with employability skills aligned with current market trends, enhancing their prospects for civilian employment and career advancement.
The founding visionaries of the University firmly believed that excellence in higher education is the greatest investment innation-building. They enlisted the expertise of eminent educationists such as Dr. T.R. Seshadri, Dr. S. Bhagavantham, Prof. Hiren Mukherjee, Prof. Humayun Kabir, and Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao—luminaries who set high standards in teaching and research. Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman, a proud alumnus of the University, played a pivotal role in establishing its research foundations in Physics. Another distinguished alumnus, Padma Vibhushan Prof. C.R. Rao, gained global recognition as one of the world’s foremost statisticians.
