Biochemistry
Program Description
Classical Biochemistry - the analysis of the many pathways by which cells synthesise and degrade organic molecules â has now broadened to include, for example, the structure and function of the highly complex organelles which mediate energy transfer in the cell and the molecular mechanisms by which genes are expressed. Modern Biophysical Chemistry now permits descriptions of biological macro-molecules at a level previously only possible for simple chemicals, while technical advances have brought subjects once only comprehended at the morphological or physiological level (e.g. embryonic development, neurophysiology, immunology) into the area of biochemistry. The chemistry component of the Warwick course acquaints students with the concepts and techniques needed to understand biochemical systems. The rest of the degree introduces students to the core subjects of biochemistry and to exciting developments in molecular biology, genetic engineering and biotechnology.
