Chemistry (MChem)

Program Description

The MChem and BSc Chemistry degree courses are identical during Years One and Two. The real decision – whether to continue to a BSc or MChem – is made at the end of the second year. Candidates need to obtain at least a lower second class pass in their second year to proceed to the MChem degree.

Proficiency in transferable skills is an essential feature of both degrees. At the end of the first year, it is also possible to transfer to a Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry stream.

MChem students may take a six or twelve month assessed industrial placement in their third year. The twelve month placement option involves taking certain core modules via distance learning during the placement. There is also the option of a full intercalated year in the chemical industry available to both BSc and MChem students. This sandwich year is normally taken after Year Two for BSc students, and after Year Three for MChem students, and both groups of students return to Warwick for their final year.

European placements are available as options to both BSc and MChem students: BSc students may take a one term placement with one of our partner universities in the summer of their final year, and MChem students have the additional option of extending this placement over the summer or taking a three month Australian placement or even taking the whole of their third year abroad.
