Computer science

Program Description

Computer science at the University of Mainz is divided into three areas: theoretical, practical and applied computer science.

Theoretical computer science addresses basic questions such as the kinds of problems that can be solved with the help of computers, how fast an appropriate solution can be found, and whether it might be necessary to accept a less-than-optimal solution to a particular problem.

Practical computer science deals with specific questions in the main fields of computer science such as operating systems, programming languages and its compilers, databases, and software technology. Here, the precise analysis of problems, the search for common features within a structure, and the implementation of problem-solving methods with the help of a solid knowledge of theoretical computer science are of great importance.

Applied computer science integrates the findings and inventions into industry, commerce, and public administration. The focus lies on software engineering, modelling, and simulation as well as artificial intelligence with expert systems and more 'exotic' ideas such as neural networks, genetic algorithms, and fuzzy modelling. Applied computer science has also begun to focus on the fields of multimedia and digital video.
