English and Latin Literature
Program Description
For centuries, most major authors studied the Classics, and there are many obvious links between English and Latin literature. It is the aim of the degree in English and Latin Literature not only to explore these links, but also to provide a solid foundation for the study of both literatures. In the First Year, there is a focus on the European Epic tradition, and students are required to study two major Latin authors in the original. The modules in the Second and Third Years are designed to develop the studentâs critical faculties through the reading of a variety of different texts, and there is considerable emphasis on the comparative study of English and Latin authors. Students have access to the wide range of special topics available in both English and Classics, and are encouraged to pursue their individual interests.
