English and Theatre Studies

Program Description

This degree approaches theatre from two directions: through the literary analysis of texts and via the understanding of playing spaces and performance. The teaching is shared between the Department of English & Comparative Literary Studies (three modules per year) and the School of Theatre Studies (one module per academic year). Theatre Studies modules examine developments in theatrical theory and practice, emphasising, wherever appropriate, those movements from the past that are responsible for creating the theatre of the present. The significant areas of the Theatre Studies component are the understanding and evolution of performance itself along with the development of critical approaches to the whole complex process of production. English department modules on the one hand focus specifically on theatre (these include British Theatre Since 1939, Drama and Democracy, and Shakespeare and Selected Dramatists of his Time), and on the other develop a more literary emphasis, allowing you to relate your work on drama to the study of other forms—poetry, the novel, the European epic.
