Program Description

At the School of Applied linguistics and Cultural Studies, students are offered training as translators and interpreters. In contrast to linguistics and literary studies (e.g. English or Romance Philology), this course of study focuses on the translation of written and spoken language for special purposes and recipients. Interpreting is the direct and oral rendering of spoken language. Interpreters work at conventions and international conferences, in courtrooms and government offices. A distinction is made between simultaneous interpreting (without a time delay) and consecutive interpreting (with a time delay). This profession requires a high degree of concentration and the ability to improvise since interpreters must rely almost exclusively on Language competence and memory. Normally they cannot use dictionaries (though now, computer-aided dictionaries are available in some interpreting booths).

Translators primarily deal with written texts. They translate all manner of specialised and general texts, such as commercial correspondence, books, expert reports, brochures, etc. Translators need a very good feel for style. They have to be able to translate texts for special purposes and recipients. Anyone who has ever been annoyed by a misleading and poorly translated instruction manual knows how important these two factors are.
